Where and when you will study

This fully-online, part-time PGCert means you can study from anywhere in the world and fit it around your day-to-day life.

You will complete four taught units in 12 months and learn through a mix of interactive teaching and have plenty of opportunities to work collaboratively with your peers. You can choose to undertake single CPD units one at a time, or complete all four to receive your PGCert.

Coursework and assessment

The course is delivered entirely via online learning, including assessment. Each module of the course runs over 10 weeks, with a nominal 15 hour per week of student work. There are short podcasts, activities and quizzes, interspersed with discussion activities, where you'llcontribute to a discussion board.

The course has been designed to fulfil the aspirations and needs of all sectors that by developing a world-class health informatics workforce that is integral to multi-professional teams with the technical, methodological and communication skills to be able to deliver high-quality, innovative healthcare delivery, in a range of settings.

Each week during a 10-week module consists of:

  • An overview of the material, presenting the learning objectives for the week (video).
  • Explanatory material (3h of student activity/week) in the form of video lectures, papers/articles, the course text, and links to further resources.
  • Exercises (4h/week). These are a mixture of formative/summative tasks with discussion of these required in the discussion boards. Feedback will be given in the weekly tutorial.
  • Discussion (2h/week). Students are encouraged to discuss the exercises and material in the forums where tutors will facilitate peer learning, providing feedback/input where necessary.
  • Formative Questionnaire. This is to gather students' questions and highlight misconceptions ready for the tutorial.
  • Tutorial (1h/week). Students will video conference with their tutor in groups of 6-8 to discuss and give/receive feedback.

Entry requirement for international students

Academic entry qualification overview: We require an honours degree (minimum Upper Second) or overseas equivalent in one or the following subjects. Mathematics or statistics, biological, medical, physical or computer sciences subjects, with sufficient evidence of the relevant units taken. International students must demonstrate English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system. Specifically, we require a minimum of: IELTS : 6.5 overall (and a minimum of 6 for writing) or equivalent; TOEFL: 90 internet-based (with 25 in each component)

Applicants must provide a personal statement of no more than 350 words detailing why they wish to study this course and what they think they will bring to it. Within their statement, they should include details of any prior learning undertaken within a professional context and what the impact of the bursary would be. The personal statement should be submitted alongside the online application and other supporting documentation.

Eligibility criteria: This bursary is tenable for one year only; Applicants may be of any nationality; Candidates must have submitted an application for a place on the PGCert programme by the bursary application deadline; Students who have already accepted full scholarships or bursaries for January 2021 entry or are already in receipt of a full scholarship or bursary are ineligible to apply. Conditions of any PGCert Bursary Award : Bursary Award Holders have a commitment to: provide blog entries throughout their study; engage with requests for video testimonials if possible during their course; write a testimonial at the end of their course.

HCRI honours its partnership with the IFRC by offering a number of competitive bursaries to which only members of the Red Cross Red Crescent Societies may apply. These bursaries are: intended to support those most in need, and are awarded based on a number of criteria including reference, and the quality of the reflections in the applicant's personal statement; tenable for one year only commencing September 2021); open to applicants of any nationality. Criteria 1: The applicant must have submitted a complete application to the online Postgraduate Certificate in Global Health, including an application form, tailored online reference, and personal statement. Criteria 2: The applicant must be a volunteer or staff member with the Movement (i.e. IFRC/ICRC/RCRC). A reference from an appropriate colleague within the Movement is not essential but would support your application. Students who have already accepted full scholarships or bursaries for September 2021 entry or are already in receipt of a full scholarship or bursary are ineligible to apply.
