What will I learn?

Whether you have a clear research direction or just some emerging ideas, we can help you shape, strengthen and refine a PhD proposal and connect you with relevant academic expertise. We have many areas of expertise and specialism, and can support research in other areas as well. We have strong interests in the material history of our field and we also encourage practice-informed research.

We supervise research in:

  • history and technology of printing, typefounding and type composition
  • history of letterforms and type
  • history and design of non-Latin typefaces (including Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Indian, South-east Asian)
  • influence of composing technologies and practices on type forms
  • type design for cross-media use.

Entry requirements

For international students

To be accepted onto a research degree programme, you will need to have obtained a strong merit grade (equivalent to 65% or above on a UK programme for both the coursework and the dissertation) on a master's degree in a relevant field, but applicants with other qualifications may be accepted in certain circumstances. Our requirement is that before starting the course, you have an overall International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0, with no sub-component below 6.5. TOEFL (iBT): 88.
