Surveying BSc (Hons) Robert Gordon University

Course info

The Surveying degree is a linked course which combines two different strands; Quantity Surveying and Building Surveying. You will develop a range of skills relating to the built environment including; managing tasks and solving problems, applying numeracy, as well as design, technology and management skills and communication. A distinctive feature of the course is our common first year, which allows you the flexibility to experience construction modules alongside both building and quantity surveying based modules, to then decide which discipline you wish to pursue throughout the remainder of your studies. Building Surveying : You will gain an in-depth understanding of how to manage, maintain and adapt buildings to ensure the continued use of our built environment assets. Quantity Surveying : You will develop skills and techniques in cost planning, contract administration, building economics and measurement.

You will learn in relatively small class sizes in our dedicated Surveying and Construction Management Studio. Teaching is through a blend of directed learning, tutorials and live situations where you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in practice. Our learning is ‘hands on’ and you will work seamlessly between drawings, computer packages and note taking, both individually and in groups. In addition to classroom based lectures and workshops, you will be able to take part in organised visits to construction sites, undertake field studies and building surveys, hear from industry professionals in guest lectures and attend lunch time CPD sessions.

Surveying equips you with a skill set that opens many alternative doors including careers in built heritage conservation, contracting, project and supply chain management and procurement. Both building and quantity surveying graduates are sought by a wide variety of employers for their transferable skills, commercial, financial and business acumen, and their technical abilities. Quantity Surveyors can be employed in the private and public sector, work for consultancies and contractors. On graduation opportunities exist in the fields of surveying practice, construction, heavy and civil engineering, supply chain management for the energy and petro-chemical industries and local and national government.
