The institution has a unique co-op learning environment for its 20,000 students across 11 locations. Northeastern University is also home to one of the largest international student communities in America.
A tier-one research university, Northeastern’s expert faculty teaches a variety of qualifications, including undergraduate, research programs and graduate. Ranked within the top 50 universities in America by U.S. News, students are taught by high-quality scholars, practitioners, and industry experts, with a 14:1 student to teacher ratio.
Students receive dedicated support from career and academic coaches. The university’s career services have been consistently ranked in the top five of American universities for 14 years by the Princeton Review.
A global university with a main campus in Boston, students can also study at campuses in Charlotte, Seattle, San Jose, San Francisco, Portland, Toronto, Vancouver, and London. The university also has 3,300 corporate partners worldwide, and 2,000 employers in the Global Experiential Network.
This worldwide presence creates unique opportunities, and students can take part in professional placements, co-op programs, internships, and experimental learning across 148 countries.
A diverse institution where 36 percent of its community are international students, there are plenty of opportunities for recreation and socializing too. Between 2019 and 2020 over 19,000 students took part in 4,923 organizations, including clubs and societies, sporting activities and youth initiatives.
93 percent of Northeastern students have found work or remained in graduate school within nine months of graduating. Providing students with relevant skills for their chosen careers, 89 percent of graduates entered a workplace that was relevant to what they studied at Northeastern.

“One of the first things my manager said to me was that, normally, people don’t get hired for this kind of role right after college. The fact that I had work experience from my co-op is what landed me the job.”— Nicolas Binford, Computer Engineering
“My family is thrilled I decided to pursue my master’s degree at Northeastern. They’re glad I found a program I’m passionate about.” — Xulixiao ‘Allie’ Tian, Khoury College of Computer Sciences, Align Khoury
“I chose Northeastern for the breadth of co-ops, which gave me the chance to explore my options. Participating in different co-ops allowed me to identify what I liked about my field, but more importantly, what I didn’t like. I got to discover what I wanted to do with my future with little risk.” — Rachna Igwe, Chemical Engineering
“Northeastern students are smart, ambitious, and aggressive, and they’re driven not only by the desire to succeed, but also the feat of failure, which is a tremendous motivator.” — Amin Khoury, Inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Entrepreneur Award
“What separates Northeastern from other universities is the culture here. It’s very supportive and friendly. The students are high caliber. When you’re with other good, competent, interested, and aspirational students, it makes the learning experience better.” — Professor Jim O’Donnell, College of Professional Studies, Project Management
“My students are incredibly engaged. They’re curious about my work and want to make an impact on the world." — Professor Shalanda Baker, School of Law, College of Social Sciences and Humanities
“We want to give you a strong foundational, theoretical, and hands-on experience for your master’s program because that’s what employers want and that is what the field really needs.” — Professor Hanumant Singh, College of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
In every program, from certificate to doctorate degree, students turn rigorous classroom studies and ideas into action. They benefit from supervision at an industry organization through the Experiential Network (XN). There’s also the Experiential Ph.D., where lab and classroom learning is supported with paid fellowships and placements at businesses, non-profits, and research institutes. Students are guided by faculty, academic advisors, and mentors from start to finish.
Rigorous academics, tier one research, experiential learning programs and studying at a top-ranked U.S. university develop students into highly employable individuals who can truly make a difference as global citizens working across all disciplines. Students who achieve eligible science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion optional practical training (OPT). The connection to the Northeastern community and more than 225,000 alumni around the world provides lifelong support to students’ personal and professional goals.
Set within the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, Northeastern recently launched the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things. The Institute brings together a wide range of expertise in different areas of communication, networking, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and more.
Director of the Institute, Tommaso Melodia, who is also Northeastern’s William Lincoln Smith Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, said that over 100 of Northeastern’s top researchers will collaborate with each other and different universities, industries and government organizations to change the way people around the world are connected.

To be admitted to Northeastern University, international students must meet a number of academic and language requirements. The requirements and application process vary depending on the program and college.
Strong English skills are necessary to be successful in the experiential learning programs and academically rigorous classroom environment. All students, regardless of citizenship, must demonstrate English language proficiency when applying.
The minimum scores vary between each program and college, and all applications are fully considered by the Admissions Committee. Students are encouraged to read about Northeastern’s English proficiency requirements.
Global Pathways, an intensive academic program that helps students improve their English language skills while gaining confidence within an American university. Students can earn academic credits toward their degree programs and upon successful completion of the program and progression requirements can enter their degree program.
“I enjoyed the speaking lectures and the opportunity to practice presenting in English. It helped me become comfortable making presentations once I started my master’s degree.” Chao Xu, MS Analytics, 2020
If, prior to enrolling at Northeastern, students have completed four consecutive years in a high school or university where academic English was the language of instruction for all courses (excluding foreign language acquisition courses), they may be eligible for a waiver. This is provided they have also demonstrated the required English language proficiency, literature, and composition courses. Students must provide Northeastern with their final or predicted results from externally assessed examinations.
Northeastern is a world leader in experiential learning. This method combines theoretical knowledge, research, and practical application. Graduate students, from master’s through to doctorate programs, and in professional and certificate programs, put knowledge to work at Fortune 500 and start-up companies, universities, government agencies, non-profits, and global organizations.
Flexible experiential learning allows students to apply the skills they learn in the classroom to
real-world challenges while working alongside experienced industry professionals. Students further develop their skills and knowledge when they return to the classroom after their co-op placements. They then discover how to use theory, research, and practical application together to be innovative in their work.
Some of the world’s most influential academics call Northeastern home. They are attracted by the
interdisciplinary collaboration and increased focus, passion, and knowledge that students bring to the classroom. More than 500 tenured and tenure-track faculty members have been appointed in the past five years and the number of external awards for faculty research has largely increased because of this.
Students have numerous opportunities to work hand-in-hand with faculty members to pursue research in cutting-edge fields such as nanotechnology, network science, biotechnology, and urban public policy. They also have access to the latest developments in their areas of study and get the support and mentorship they need to succeed.
It’s the best of both worlds, big opportunities at a large research powerhouse, and small, intimate research and classroom settings. Research opportunities are also offered outside of the university through the experiential learning programs with research partners around the globe.
More than 200 programs are on offer from Northeastern’s nine multi-disciplinary colleges and schools. Each college is home to a close-knit community, where there are unique programs and approaches to learning:
Designed to meet the evolving needs of 21st century industries, programs are flexible, allowing students to create an educational experience that fits around their academic and professional goals.
