What will I learn?

Pittsburg State University’s English major provides students the opportunity to select from four emphases: Creative Writing, Language, Professional Writing, and Traditional.

About Degree

The Bachelor of Arts in English at Pittsburg State University is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of analyzing great works of British, American, and international authors, of engaging with the ideas and themes found in the best that has been thought and said, and of tracing the grand arcs of literary history. Although students take courses in grammar and writing, the majority of the courses focus on literature, including major authors and time periods, genres, themes, and special topics in literature from around the world.

Career Options

Recent graduates have found careers as professional writers, grant writers, editors, web content developers, legal assistants, community college academic advisers, and managers in different kinds of businesses and organizations. Many of our graduates go on to M.F.A., Ph.D., or other professional programs.

Creative Writing Emphasis

With the Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, students have two avenues to choose from in our emphasis: Poetry or Fiction. Whichever path students decide to take, they will be guided by our experienced and encouraging staff. Students will be guided through classes such as Intro to Creative Writing, Multi-Genre Writing, and The Craft of Fiction/Poetry. Students will grow and learn to express themselves in a nurturing environment while they strive for their career goals.

English Language Emphasis

A Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in language provides students with a broad base of knowledge in the English language. Coursework is designed to ensure successful students are proficient in cross-cultural communication and composition.

Professional Writing Emphasis

If students want to write for business and technology, our newly-revised emphasis in Professional Writing is a perfect fit. We in the English Program wish to encourage our English majors in whatever endeavor they wish to pursue. Students who follow this emphasis are guided through classes that will promote their business acumen and professional marketability.

Our faculty will give students the tools for document design, web design, and publications. The classes that are offered include Theories and Technologies of Writing, The Art of Discourse, and Writing for the Public. This emphasis culminates in a professional writing internship during the students’ last semester, which will give them real world experience and portfolio material to give them a head start in their business ambitions.

English, Traditional Emphasis

Our students in the English Program take pride in their ability to analyze literature and formulate academic writing from those analyses. This desire has culminated in the Traditional Emphasis here at Pitt State. We believe that understanding literature not only gives students greater academic knowledge, but also prepares them for a career in academia or academic writing.

Students in this emphasis spend their time working hand-in-hand with our staff to read and analyze literature, while also learning how to formulate powerful arguments that can be used for conferences and other academic pursuits. Some of the classes we offer include Writing About Literature, British Literature, and American Literature.
