Bachelor of Arts in Spanish

USA

What will I learn?

The USC Upstate Spanish program aims to teach and facilitate communication in Spanish, to provide knowledge and understanding of Hispanic cultures, to build multilingual communities, to draw comparisons between various cultural and linguistic systems, and to expand our students’ educational experience by connecting Spanish with other disciplines in the University.

Spanish majors are prepared for a competitive global marketplace, particularly in view of the international nature of the Upstate community and the growing Hispanic population in the United States, home of the world's second largest Spanish-speaking population. Demand for translators and interpreters is expected to grow by 40 percent in the coming years, and our Spanish majors can be part of the bridge between businesses, health care providers, educators, non-profit services, and the multilingual communities they serve.

Curriculum

The study of world languages and literature lies at the very center of the humanities. World language majors not only acquire skills in reading, writing and speaking world languages, but they also explore and develop an appreciation for literature and broader cultures of lands and people around the globe. The Spanish program offers students the opportunity to study the language, literature, and culture of the Hispanic world, including both European and Latin American contexts. Our alumni work globally in multinational businesses, international and American-based nonprofit organizations, the Peace Corps and in schools and universities around the world.

A minor in Spanish and minor in Spanish translation/interpreting are also offered, requiring students to complete 18 hours of courses, with at least 12 hours of upper level Spanish courses. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, the number of job openings for interpreters and translators is projected to increase by an incredible 46 percent by the year 2022. Students pursuing this minor open up future career opportunities in a range of professional fields.
