The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program is an advanced engineering degree that prepares students for leadership roles in academia, industry, and research institutions specializing in aeronautics and astronautics.

All Ph.D. students identify an area of concentration. Currently, the department offers concentrations in the areas of:

  • Controls
  • Fluids
  • Plasmas
  • Structures

Time-to-Degree: PhD students in our department typically complete their degrees in 5-6 years. For example:

Initial Advising Appointment: In order to plan for courses and degree requirements (below), incoming students should meet with their academic advisor(s) before the start of their first Autumn Quarter -- at least two weeks before classes begin.

Years 1 - 2: MSAA / Graduate Fundamentals

Year 3: Qualifying Exam & Doctoral Coursework

Year 4: General Exam & Dissertation

Years 5 - 6: Complete Dissertation & Final Exam

Entry requirement for international students

Previous Academic Preparation: The Doctor of Philosophy is an advanced engineering degree. It is expected that admitted applicants will hold an undergraduate degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering.

Minimum GPA and Exam Scores: The University of Washington Graduate School requires an applicant to have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be considered eligible for admission. Beyond this, our department does not maintain a fixed minimum for either GPA or exam scores. However, admission to our department is competitive.

English Proficiency:

TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher

International English Language Testing System (IELTS): The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) provides a profile of a candidate’s ability to use English. Candidates receive scores on a Band Scale from 1 to 9.
