Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cancer and Cell Biology University of Cincinnati

Course info

Graduate training in Cell and Cancer Biology has a long history at UC. For many years, the Program was run by the Department of Cancer and Cell Biology. In 1994, the Program was expanded and is now truly interdisciplinary and interdepartmental with participation from over 40-50 faculty members from multiple departments and divisions of UC as well as Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC). Faculty selected to join the program are recognized leaders in their fields and provide excellence and dedication in graduate training. As a consequence, our graduate students excel in research, are highly successful in their scientific careers and experience a richer environment for learning Cancer and Cell Biology.

All PhD students accepted to the program receive full tuition remission, a nationally competitive stipend, and a health insurance plan. Successful completion of the program typically involves four to six years beyond the Bachelor’s degree, varying according to background and special interests. It is our philosophy that the PhD training must be intellectually stimulating, congenial, and geared toward a successful career in modern research.

Entry requirement for international students

For our graduate programs, we welcome applications from students who hold a baccalaureate degree (or higher) from a college or university regarded as standard by a regional or general accrediting agency, and have at least a B average in undergraduate course work (or otherwise give evidence of promise that is judged satisfactory by the admitting program and the Graduate School).

Standardized Tests of English Proficiency

Most students fulfill the English requirement by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS), or the PEARSON Test of English (PTE). For IELTS, an overall band score of 7 is sufficient for graduate admission. For PEARSON, a score of 68 is sufficient. TOEFL requirements vary based on the type of TOEFL test taken, and scores are valid for up to two years. The minimum university requirement is: 600-603 (paper-based test), or 250 (computer-based test), or 100 (internet-based test).

* Please check with your chosen school for the exact entry requirements for your programme.
