Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Engineering Florida Institute of Technology

Course info

The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Engineering is conferred primarily in recognition of creative accomplishment and ability to investigate engineering problems independently, rather than for completion of a definite course of study. The work should consist of advanced studies and research leading to new knowledge and significant contribution to a chosen research area. In addition, to demonstrate the achievement of new knowledge in the field, a publication in a professional journal of conference proceedings is required.

A minimum of 24 credit hours of coursework beyond the master’s degree and at least 24 credit hours of ECE 6999 Research and Dissertation in Electrical or Computer Engineering are required.

The student’s advisor and the department head must approve a program of study. A wide degree of latitude is allowed in course selection and research interest within the capability of the university and the student’s academic background. This requirement is imposed at the discretion of the doctoral committee.

After admission to doctoral candidacy, a yearly seminar demonstrating progress must be presented to the graduate faculty.

Graduates of Florida Tech with a master's degree in computer engineering are able to continue their research in the doctoral program. Not only will they advance their research, but this advanced technical proficiency can also lead to increased earning potential and job opportunities.

In the highly competitive technical workforce, graduates with a computer engineering Ph.D. will find that their expertise can lead to leadership positions in their industry of choice – from aerospace, automotive, medical, and railway to computers, communications and power. Florida Tech engineering and technical degree programs empower future leaders; where "High Tech with a Human Touch," is at the heart of every degree.

Experienced Faculty

Florida Tech's faculty brings a wide range of experience to the classroom. Small class sizes allow professors to mentor students and work closely on relevant topical research in the industry – the kind of specialized attention not often found in university classrooms. Computer engineering Ph.D. students find a collaborative, "peer" environment in which to study and conduct research at Florida Tech.

High-Quality Curriculum That Transfers to the Workplace

As technological innovations continue to develop, employers demand employees with advanced expertise reflective of the issues currently facing their industry. Computer engineering Ph.D. graduates are the type of expert candidates that can meet this challenge. After completing challenging classroom curriculum, extensive research and technical laboratory experiences, graduates understand the prevailing trends, theoretical applications and best practices in the industry.

After completing the capstone research experience for a master's degree, computer engineering Ph.D. students continue their exploration of a computer engineering topic, not only advancing their research skills, but also their understanding of the type of complex challenges they will face on the job. If they choose to remain in academia or research, this advanced research proficiency provides graduates with the foundation they need to make an impact in the industry.

Graduates of the doctoral program at Florida Tech with a computer engineering Ph.D. are well prepared to remain a researcher. They are also subject-matter experts who can find advanced positions in companies around the world as software engineer, technical analyst, telecommunications director, VOIP engineer, electrical engineer, aerospace engineer, computer network architect and others.
