What will I learn?

This is a post-baccalaureate certificate to prepare graduates of English programs for teacher licensure in English Language Arts at the secondary education level is offered through the College of Arts and Sciences.

At Governors State University, the English Education certificate program enables you to turn your undergraduate degree in English into a rewarding career as a teacher on the secondary level. English teachers guide their students through the world of writers who use the power and scope of words to explore the joys and struggles of life and humanity. Our 21st century world is filled with new options for sharing information - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are changing the way we communicate - but it is still necessary to learn writing skills so that the words on the computer screen have meaning.

Outstanding Preparation

The sequence of course work is approved by the Illinois State Board of Education and leads to an initial high school licensure in English Language Arts. You can also obtain an endorsement for teaching in middle school. To be recommended for an Illinois State Board of Education teaching license, you must present evidence of having passed the Test of Academic Proficiency (formerly Basic Skills), Subject Matter Knowledge and Assessment of Professional Teaching examinations of the Illinois Certification Testing System.

Entry requirements

For international students

In addition to meeting all university admissions requirements for the certificate, applicants must meet the following requirements to be admitted to the English Education certificate:

  • have a bachelor's or higher in English from a regionally accredited college or university;
  • have a cumulative average G.P.A. of 2.5 or higher in all lower division courses applied to the degree program; and
  • submit a word-processed essay not to exceed 300 words explaining why the applicant wishes to be a teacher

International Students must meet the university language requirement for admission to the university. Applicants must take either Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Pearson Test of English (PTE).

  • For the IELTS, applicants must meet the minimum acceptable score of 6.0 academic version.
  • TOEFL Exam scores: Paper - 550; Listening - 55; Reading - 54; Writing - 58; Computer Internet - 213; Listening - 21; Reading - 24; Writing - 21; Internet (iBT) - 80: Listening - 20; Speaking - 20; Reading - 20; Writing - 20.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Exam score 53: Listening - 53; Speaking - 53; Reading - 53; Writing - 53.
