Mississippi College, a private, co-educational, Christian university of liberal arts and sciences, was founded in 1826 as Hampstead Academy, when most of the United States was still wilderness. The state of Mississippi itself had been admitted into the Union as the twentieth state only nine years earlier and was an untamed frontier where hard work, diligence, and faith promised reward. Mississippi College began educating men and women to become leaders in their fields in professional and spiritual arenas. The oldest institution of higher education in Mississippi, Mississippi College offers students over 80 undergraduate areas of study, covering most areas of a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum. The college has a student-to-faculty ratio that allows for more personal time with faculty and a diverse community of students from around the world.
