Materials Science and Engineering focuses on the development of new materials and new applications for materials in engineering. Current research programs include nanomaterials, nanostructures, nanoelectronics, nanodevices, nanocharacterization, device/system packaging materials, materials for fuel cells and related alternative energy systems, biocompatible materials, soft materials such as biological materials and polymeric materials, electronic and photonic materials, hybrid materials, interfacial engineering of materials, and multifunctional materials. Faculty with relevant research are affiliated with the Integrated Nanofabrication Research Facility (INRF), the National Fuel Cell Research Center (NFCRC), the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), the Advanced Power and Energy Program (APEP), and the Laboratory for Electron and X-ray Instrumentation (LEXI), among others.

The MSE graduate degree program is hosted by the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (ChEMS). Faculty who may serve as advisors are listed as affiliated with the ChEMS Department and include faculty with strong materials science and engineering research programs from other departments. The M.S. degree reflects achievement of an advanced level of competence for professional practice of materials science and engineering. Two options are available: a thesis option and a comprehensive examination option.

Entry requirement for international students

All applicants must meet the following minimum academic requirements:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) from a recognized academic institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California
  • Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0

TOEFL Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • On the TOEFL iBT minimum score of 80
  • For the paper-based test, a minimum score of 550

IELTS Score Requirements for Admission Consideration:

  • An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module.
  • Applicants who qualify for admission by the above criteria, and also achieve a score of 8 or higher on the Speaking module may be eligible to serve as a Teaching Assistant.
