What will I learn?

Whether your goal is a career in music, to transfer into a four-year university as a music major, or simply to further your musical skill and understanding, the MSJC music program welcomes you! As a college-trained musician, you can find careers in a wide variety of fields from teaching and performing to song-writing/composing, recording/production, and music therapy. The skills and abilities you will gain can also be applied in other majors ranging from early childhood education to digital media to performing arts management.

An Associate in Arts in Music for Transfer will fulfill the requirements for students to transfer to a CSU institution as a Music major. The courses in the A.A.-T in Music for Transfer degree give students the basic skills and abilities in music to prepare them for involvement in musical activities and careers in performance, education, composition, and other related fields.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Build performance skills in instrumental music, voice, piano, and/or guitar.
  • Discover how musical works are composed through the study of foundational elements: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, instrumentation, and texture.
  • Develop an awareness of the aesthetic values in music and the roles music plays in the aesthetics of various time periods, styles, and world regions.
  • Explore how music has evolved throughout history, and in specific styles and world regions.
  • Explore various career paths in music and the expectations of each field.
  • Enrich the community through interaction in the Arts.

Entry requirements

For international students

Students must have completed the equivalent of an American high school diploma; twelve years of elementary and secondary school or students must be at least 18 years of age.

In order to succeed in regular college courses, students must have a score of 450 Written Based Test (WBT) or better. A score of 133 or better is required on the Computer Base Test (CBT) and 45 on the Internet Based Test (IBT), STEP Eiken test – Level 2, IELTS 4.5, or English language completion certificate. Application deadlines: Fall Semester is May 15; Spring Semester is October 15.
