should you study a low-cost degree course abroad

It’s a wise idea to look for cost-effective countries and courses abroad but you should always weigh your options.

When planning to study abroad, if you are looking only at saving money and thinking you should choose some low-cost courses or universities abroad, instead focusing on the quality of life and education – then you need to think again!

It’s a wise idea to look for cost-effective countries and courses abroad but you should always weigh your options. You may not want to compromise on the quality of your education.

There are several ways of looking at this situation:

  • First, if you get a chance to study at any Ivy League college where your entire education might be fully funded, then you might make a swift decision because Ivy Leagues are at par – the whole world knows!
  • Second, if you get an admit from a public or private university where the study cost is cheaper, but your instinct says that this is a dead-end, and you are not going to gain anything valuable studying here, just listen to your inner voice, but of course after doing thorough research.
  • Third, if a well-known private university is offering you a low-cost course, and at the same time it is one of the sought-after universities that guarantees placements and internships with reputed organisations, then you can take a call on this. In this case, try to get in touch with any seniors or faculty members who you know can affirm the quality of education imparted by that particular university.

Another way of looking at this situation is ‘you can save some, if not more, money by choosing a low-cost course abroad, but will that really alter your financial situation?’

Simply put, if a university offers a course worth, say £8000 (course fee) and the same course is offered for £7000 at some other university, Will this make a huge difference to you?

You need to analyse which course will add value to your career. Besides, you need to consider the cost of living and other expenses that will entirely depend on where you choose to stay abroad ( since the cost of living could be more than the course fee).

Also if you are taking an education loan for your abroad studies, don’t you think you will eventually pay similar interest rates, irrespective of which course you choose, and, most importantly, the loan repayment will depend on how much you get to earn after completing your studies?

Repayment could sometimes become a burden, both for your family and you, so you should always think twice before taking overseas education loans.

However, repayment will not only depend on your earnings but also on the place you choose to live. Suppose you start living and working in London after you graduate, earning a moderate salary, then it might take a long time for you to repay the education loan because you will need to focus on other expenses too. Moreover, you can’t keep repaying your loan year in and year out, without having any savings.
