Web Designer

Web designing is all about creating, building and supporting websites or internet applications. A web designer or web developer is specifically concerned with the aesthetics, ease of use, impressive and relevant content, functionality, appropriate graphics, convenient navigation, search features, visual clues and other features which are vital for building successful websites.

The procedure usually followed for designing a web page or application is a complex one. It generally includes multiple disciplines such as graphic design, interaction design, animation and graphics, information architecture and design, communication design, SEO or search engine optimization, corporate identity, human to computer interactivity, typography and even photography. Web pages can either be static or dynamic depending on the programming objective and requirements of clients.

Work environment

Many wonder why one web design company produces quality work while another doesn’t, when they have such similar expertise and experience. The answer to this difference in the quality of output usually lies in the work environment. Web designing calls for an environment that exudes energy, creativity and efficiency. So when you look out for work opportunities after graduation, its best to choose an organisation that fosters creativity. To be a successful web designer, you need to have a passion for your job. Most web designers find themselves having to meet deadlines and work under some pressure.

Web designers spend most of their working days on a computer, which allows them the freedom to work from home.

Career opportunities

Work Opportunities are available in plenty for students qualified in web designing and development. Popular options include Web designer, Web Developer, Webmaster, Content provider and Web project managers. Places where you could find employment would be multinational companies, marketing firms, independent web design studios, and advertising agencies. Many web designers also choose to work as freelancers.

Both web development and web designing go hand in hand, and a convergence of the two skill sets of programming and design/graphics is usually essential.

A web project manager works with other members of the web team to bring in Web projects on time, on budget, and to specifications. Not all websites use Project managers, but they are essential for business sites and large web projects.

A web designer works with a variety of programming languages to create web pages and internet sites. They must therefore have a good grasp of traditional design fundamentals, along with an advanced knowledge of the current and emerging internet technologies that will allow them to make their ideas a reality on the internet.

What to study

Aspiring web designers could either pursue a foundation degree, diploma / certificate courses, bachelors or master’s degrees in web design or related fields such as multimedia design, interactive computing and digital media development. A popular study option is the BSc. in Web Design and Development that most colleges in the UK and the USA offer.

This course equips students with the skills required to create rich, dynamic and innovative internet applications on their own or in a multi-disciplinary team.

HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and Flash are the most widely used programming languages that allow web designers to formulate and control different elements on a web page. Students intending to work as web designers must have a good grasp of at least some, if not all, of these. Besides this, Adobe Photoshop is the most popular image manipulation software, which web designers use, and knowledge of the same is usually required.

Entry requirements

Those of you interested in pursuing a career in web designing at the bachelor’s level should have cleared your 10+2 examination. For admission into a post graduate degree, you will need to have completed your bachelor’s degree. However, your bachelor’s degree can be in any discipline or stream such as arts, science or commerce.
