On September 11, 2019, the UK government announced the reinstatement of a post-study work visa for two years. This means that international students pursuing graduate/undergraduate courses in the country can stay in the country for two years after the completion of the course program.

As expected, this announcement has garnered huge support from students across many countries. Industry experts feel that this move would result in a huge influx of international students to the UK.

So, what does this announcement mean to Indian students? Well, the following sections look at the issue with Indian students' aspirations.

Destination UK

The UK serves as a global hub for higher education. It is home to some of the best-rated universities that proudly claim the legacy of eminent scholars in varied fields. UK Universities find a prominent place in the list of top-ranking universities in the world. The country’s multicultural background and inclusive society make students feel at home away from home.

The country serves as a favorite destination for international students who opt to study abroad. The Oxford University, Cambridge University, University College London, Imperial College London, boast of very high academic excellence and reputation.

Another factor that matters for Indian students in the distance. There is an advantage with respect to studying in the U.K, in terms of distance and duration of travel to the country.

Students opting for international university courses look for the best education standards - university performance across research, teaching, employability and global experience.
They would want to gain a rich international experience while graduating, and the right course at the right place is a gateway to that.

Welcome Move

Universities UK International (UUKi) director Vivienne Stern welcomed the announcement hoping it would expand the opportunities for students to flourish internationally. She says that "this will put the UK back where we ought to be – the first-choice destination for international students".

On an optimistic note, the Guardian newspaper has predicted that “Under the new policy, the visas would have no cap on numbers and would allow graduates to apply for jobs regardless of their skills or the subject they studied. The government said part of the aim was to recruit talented graduates in disciplines such as maths, engineering, and technology.”

Sea Of Opportunities

Agencies close to the UK government have highlighted that the new work visa is aimed not just at retaining the “best and brightest” in the UK, but to facilitate “future breakthroughs in science, technology and research and other world-leading work that international talent brings to the UK”.

The UK government does understand the great potential of international students in STEM subjects and keeping this mind, it is sponsoring projects that would welcome international talent.  This includes the £200 million genetics project, a whole-genome sequencing volunteer project in the UK Biobank, which was launched recently. The project aims to fight and eradicate deadly diseases through government aided research programs.

Increasing Number of Applicants

The UK government home office web site reports that ever since the announcement of the visa extension scheme, there has been a sharp increase in the number of applicants to study in the country.

"In the year ending June 2019, the number of sponsored student visa applications rose 9% to 236,679. This included an 11% increase for the higher education sector to 201,919."

Two Year Work Visa Period - Benefits galore

All the investments and efforts of students to secure a degree will pay off. Since the new graduate route will enable them to transition from education to suitable placement.

By reinstating the two-year route, the UK government has sent the right message to international students that its job markets are open for them.

International students can benefit from the two-year post-study work visa period which will give them enough time to consider various options and find the right job.  They can look forward to gaining work experience in their study of expertise and in the country from where they have graduated. Also, it may also pave the way for their future settlement and citizenship in the country!
