Everyone wants to visit Sri Lanka at least once in their lifetime?

And why not!

The historic spot has many picturesque places to visit, and has attracted people from all over the world. The clean and pristine beaches and well-maintained streets and lanes – Sri Lanka is one of the rare breed countries. When you visit the country, you will realise that the people respect the environment they live in and also respect each other’s spaces.

People all over the world appreciate the beauty of the Lanka. But there are people (residents) who want to move out of Sri Lanka either in search of job or education. As per the UGC report, almost 8% of students move abroad for higher education from Sri Lanka.

Lankan students have the privilege of free education by the government, till the university level. The school and college curricula are approved by the Ministry of Education. Every student is entitled to education by the government, and there is a constant effort to raise awareness amongst children and parents to promote and support education.

The literacy rate in Sri Lanka is around 94%, with majority of people across all age groups being familiar with the English language, alongside Tamil or Sinhala languages being spoken widely.

There is no exact reason known to us why students from Sri Lanka go abroad for their higher studies. However, possible reasons could be the work opportunities available abroad, the quality of education, research outcome, well-known faculty, the value of international degree and so on.

The British Council has stated that Sri Lanka is a potential source of higher education enrolment, and in the near future the outbound mobility from Sri Lanka will exceed 32,000 students, which is 80% more than the current UNESCO benchmark.

Enough of facts! That's all we have got to give you...

Now a question arises,

Q: Which countries do Sri Lankan students choose for their abroad education?

A: Some of the popular countries chosen by Sri Lankan students to study abroad include the USA, UK, Australia and Canada.

As per the Open Doors Report, Sri Lankan students studying at colleges and universities in the USA increased to 3080, an increase of 6.9% in 2016.

In the USA, almost 50% of Sri Lankan students opt for graduate degrees while 16% enter into OPT programmes after completing their degrees. This shows that Sri Lankan students are increasingly showing interest in pursuing STEM courses abroad, particularly in the USA.

On the other hand, there are reports indicating that Sri Lankan students have been more attracted towards European countries for their higher education. The UK has been in the list of many Sri Lankan students. The Sri Lankan education system closely resembles the British education system, which could be one reason as to why students from Sri Lanka flock to the UK for their higher studies. Alongside, other notable countries like Singapore and Malaysia have sparked equal attention from many Sri Lankan students.
