Student Mobility Trends in 2012

Did you know that a whopping number of 177 million students are enrolled worldwide for tertiary education? 2.3% of them are studying outside their country of origin and are termed ‘mobile students.’ Over the past 35 years, mobile students have tripled as a percentage of the world population. The world’s top universities have more than 1.4 million international students flocking to them, which is about 2.5% of the universities worldwide.

Intelligence Unit tells us that Europe is by far the most favourite student destination, receiving 41% of the world’s international students. Over 55% of the international students go to the top 10 destination countries: the U.S. that has around 666,581 international students; the second popular destination being the UK has 368,968 international students. Australia is the third most sought-after destination that sees 257, 637 international students.
On the other hand, the countries that send out the most international students are China, India, and South Korea! It comes as no shock that India stands second sending out 195, 107 students to countries worldwide.
