If you’re planning on studying engineering abroad, this is a must-read for you! In February, the world-renowned Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings announced its list of world’s top universities in the field of engineering for the year 2019.

The ranking essentially encompasses five distinct branches of engineering – civil and structural, mineral and mining, electrical, chemical and mechanical. The study is based on a methodology that assesses a range of criteria including academic reputations, employer reputations, impact of the institute’s research and many more.

Here, are the universities that topped the 2019 QS World University Rankings in the field of engineering and technology. Aim to get into these universities and your career prospects is sure to rise sky-high!

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), United States

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is ranked first in the world for engineering and technology - not just by 2019 QS rankings, but also by Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019. With 93 Nobel laureates, 26 Turing Award winners, 41 astronauts, 45 Rhodes Scholars and many more its alumni, faculty members and researchers, MIT has always been at the forefront of technological research and study.

Stanford University, US

Founded in 1891, Stanford University is ranked second in the world for engineering and technology. With a total research budget of USD 1.63 billion, Stanford University is home to world-leading research activities in science and engineering. It boasts 17 Nobel laureates among its current faculty members and community, and a student to faculty ratio of 5:1.

ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland

ETH Zurich is constantly ranked among the top 10 universities in the world by both THE and QS World University Rankings. Particularly in the field of engineering and technology, ETH Zurich ranks third in the world. Until now, ETH Zurich is proud have in its community 21 Nobel laureates – including Albert Einstein. Situated in the heart of Europe, ETH Zurich is a pioneer in research in engineering and technology. 

University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is ranked second in the world and known to be one of the most prestigious universities. It is home to a whopping 107 Nobel laureates until now. With regards to engineering and technology, the university is placed fourth in the world. Of the 20,000 students studying at Cambridge University, 50 % are international students from different parts of the world.  

University of California, Berkeley (UCB) US

Established in 1868, the University of California, Berkeley ranks 5th in the world for engineering and 15th in the world (overall). With a student to faculty ratio of 17.8:1, the U.S. News and World Report ranks the university first in the country. University of California, Berkeley boasts 31 Nobel laureates among its alumni community.

  1. Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore – Ranks 6th
  2. University of Oxford UK – Ranks 6th
  3. Imperial College London, UK – Ranks 8th

  5. Tsinghua University, China – Ranks 10th
