Not all the Universities expect work experience.. but they look for some researh papers that you did in your masters..however having experience in hand will be an added advantage..
Getting admission for PhD is difficult in USA or in Canada. However, you have better chances of admission in USA as compared to Canada. PhD is fully funded (it covers your tuition, acccommodationm and living cost) in all good USA Universities and there are some Indian students who send money home during PhD study.
The PhD program is quite demanding as it need independent thinking, analyse, critical thinking, and ideas or issues to discuss on the subject area. Good writing skills is required during thesis writing and in general.
Admission in PhD is based on the following parameters:
1. Related work experience or research experience in the area of your subject.
2. If you have your research/thesis published in any international journal.
3. Good GRE score may be applicable.
4. Strong SOP showing your interest and your long term commitment.
In addition you need to meet admission requirement as per university application checklist.
You will have to visit each university to find whether PhD is available in the area of your subject before applying. After sending your application you need to contact research professors and convince them to accept your profile by demonstrating your strength, prior experience in your research area, and how you plan to contribute in the research.
Contacting research professor after your application is an important step of your admission process. Check the profile of the research professor which is normally available on the university website before you correspond with them. Apply to good numbers of universities (more the better, minimum 8 universities) as admission is quite competative.
All the best!
