Overview

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) has a rich history. The School is an independent and autonomous academic unit under the structure of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and was established in 1979.

One of the top hospitality and tourism schools in the world, SHTM welcomes close to 2,000 students from all over the world.

Students at SHTM learn from experienced faculty. They can choose from an array of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes, such as global hospitality business, international hospitality management, hotel management, tourism management, wine management and more. Its programmes help students develop key skills and professional acumen required to adapt to global workplace conditions.

The School has a one-of-a-kind teaching and research hotel called Hotel ICON which is wholly owned by the University. This is a purpose-built hotel fully integrating teaching, learning and research in a full service environment.

A joint initiative between the Hotel ICON and SHTM is the Food and Wine Academy, which is meant to help food and wine enthusiasts gain practical skills by learning through hands-on projects.

The SHTM Students’ Association is an official body that represents students. It caters to the academic life and welfare of students. A range of resources are available, including the Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Resource Centre, which holds over 165 international journal titles on hospitality, tourism and food science.

SHTM students are recognised with awards twice every year, for their outstanding academic achievements. The School offers a unique work-integrated learning approach that helps students employ their classroom knowledge to a practical atmosphere.

The SHTM has repeatedly excelled when it comes to university rankings, having taken the top spot in the "Hospitality and Tourism Management" classification of the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2017/2018.

Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management

This programme provides advanced research training on the basis of career aspirations and individual interests, allowing students to nurture their ability to finish important research in specific areas of tourism or hospitality.

Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management (D.HTM)

The course is developed for academics who seek a professional doctorate in the field of hotel and tourism management.

MSc in Global Hospitality Business

The degree is offered jointly by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Lausanne Hotel School, and the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Held across the three well-known institutions located on three continents, students will have the opportunity to immerse in the business practices and culture of each destination.

MSc/Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in International Hospitality Management

The programme helps students develop management skills, industry practice, and research competencies in the hospitality industry through interdisciplinary subject exposure, decision-making theory, problem identification, and management application.

The other MSc/PgD programmes offered at the School are in subjects including International Tourism and Convention Management, and International Wine Management.

BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management

This course educates students relating to the business of hotel management and food service management. The customer-service focus of the programme helps the graduates to do well in a broad range of complex, managerial and specialised work activities in the hotel and food service industry.

BSc (Hons) in Tourism and Events Management

This programme consists of both the theoretical as well as the practical elements of business tourism combined with an inclination in customer-service to produce graduates who are skilled to perform in tourism and events industry positions.

Points of pride

The School was listed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as one of its international Education and Training Network Centres in the year 1999. The SHTM grew to become one of the first academic institutions to attain the UNWTO’s TedQual Certification, a quality control system for tourism research, training, and education in April 2001. The SHTM is also currently one of the members of the UNWTO Knowledge Network.

The International Academy for the Study of Tourism (IAST) opted the SHTM as the residence of its permanent secretariat in 2002. The Academy works towards developing the scientific knowledge of tourism by improving both practical and theoretical research.

In the year 2003, the School was identified by the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators (ISTTE) with an "ISTTE Institutional Achievement Award" for important contributions to tourism education.

2005 saw the SHTM being ranked in 4th globally and 1st in Asia, as reported by a study published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research. The School was also ranked 2nd globally among the hotel and tourism schools based on scholarship and research, according to another study issued in the same journal.

In the period of 2014-2015, the SHTM was ranked first internationally in Tourism and Services areas, according to the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) Research Laboratory.

Facilities

The School comprises of world-class teaching as well as research facilities, including:

  • The Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Research Centre, through which students can access an extensive range of teaching and reference materials in hotel and tourism management.
  • Bistro 1979 is a multi-function, student-run food and beverage restaurant unit offering a “real-world” restaurant environment for the School’s students to experiment, experience, learn and nurture the skill sets needed in the food and beverage industry.
  • Vinoteca Lab serves as an important facility to improve the food and beverage education for students. It also prepares the School’s students to meet the demands of Hong Kong as a hub of wine.
  • The Samsung Digital Lab for Hospitality Technology is a purpose-built facility for students to both learn and practice the most recent devices and technology programmes in use within the hospitality and tourism industry.

Hotel ICON

Being completely owned by PolyU and also as SHTM’s extension, Hotel ICON is the world’s first-ever research and teaching hotel of its kind. Although other universities too have teaching hotels, Hotel ICON is unique. It is a hotel that fully incorporates teaching, research and learning in a completely service-oriented environment.

Situated in a building complex that also accommodates the SHTM campus, classrooms, research facilities, resource centres and lots more, Hotel ICON consists of three exceptional restaurants and 262 guest rooms. The hotel is a testament to Hong Kong’s design innovation and creative energy. Hotel ICON provides dynamic and interactive learning environments, and modern educational facilities.

In order to fully incorporate Hotel ICON into the School’s curriculum, there has been a revamping of a number of subjects by the SHTM, involving the daily hotel operations, financial administration, event management, service quality and entrepreneurship management, all of which consists of practical training.

Scholarships

The SHTM provides numerous scholarships to high potential students/applicants who pursue Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Hong Kong:

Master of Science (MSc) in Global Hospitality Business

Global Hospitality Business Scholarship

SHTM awards an amount of up to HKD 50,000 in scholarship to every qualified student.

Other scholarships for MSc degrees

  • SHTM Academic Excellence Scholarship

This is an entry scholarship targeted at those candidates who have excellent academic results in their undergraduate studies, and/or considerable success in globally recognised standardised tests (such as GMAT/GRE and TOEFL).

  • Drore Scholarship

This is also an entry scholarship primarily targeted at applicants who do well in both academic and non-academic pursuits.

Doctor of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management

A fund of HKD 20,000 per annum is offered to every full-time student in order to support them in their study and research. A maximum amount of HKD 20,000 would be awarded for each student’s entire study period.

Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS)

The Scheme helps students with high-calibre from across the world to study Ph.D. in Hong Kong. Successful applicants will be awarded a stipend of HKD20,000 every month, and will also have the tuition fee waived for at the most of three years.

Studentships/Assistantships

For full-time Ph.D. students, PolyU provides research studentships/assistantships, offering financial aid, which will be reviewed annually.

Associated Fund

An associated fund valued at HKD20,000 per annum is offered to each student to assist the research and studies.

Conference Attendance Grant

Ph.D. students can apply for the conference attendance grants, worth a maximum of HKD15,000 for the whole study period.
