The Doctoral Scholarships are open to persons who are enrolled or eligible to enrol full-time for a research paper of 120 credits during a 12 month period towards a Doctoral degree at Massey University. A full-time candidate will be expected to work 40 - 50 hours per week on their Doctoral qualification. Part-time applicants are not eligible. Applicants already holding a PhD or other research based doctoral degree are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are completing Honours or Masters thesis or research report must be due to submit before they apply for the Doctoral Scholarship.

Students must have enrolled on or after 1.07.17 to be eligible to apply for one or both rounds if unsuccessful in Round I 2018. 

Consideration will normally only be given to students with a GPA of 7.5 or better (on a 9 point scale). This is above an average grade of A-.

New Zealand Development Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

New Zealand Development Scholarships are a non-bilateral scheme available to candidates from the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, South Africa, Tanzania, Venezuela and Zambia.

Under this scheme candidates independently apply for scholarships. Funding is no longer available for dependents. Applicants must have an offer of place before the application deadline, or the application will not be considered.

Applicants must correctly fill out all relevant sections in the scholarship application form and include all relevant documents listed below:

  • A certified copy of your birth certificate (in English).
  • A certified copy of official evidence of any name change (in English).
  • A certified copy of the personal pages of your passport.
  • For applicants applying for undergraduate study only (where eligible), a certified copy of your official secondary school results and the grading schedule for each qualification (in English).

Commonwealth Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

This scholarship is offered to students from other parts of the Commonwealth under the commonwealth scholarship and fellowship plan. The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for students to pursue advanced courses or undertake research at a university in New Zealand. Candidates must be commonwealth citizens or British protected persons and have graduated from an institution in their own country.

Massey University Creative Arts International Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

The Scholarship is open to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in Creative Arts subjects while studying in New Zealand. The Scholarship is tenable in any of the following College of Creative Arts programs:

  • Bachelor of Design (Hons);
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons);
  • Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts;
  • Bachelor of Creative Media Production; and
  • Bachelor of Commercial Music, (“Approved Bachelor’s Program”)

Applicants must be either:

  • International full fee paying students who have completed at least one full year (i.e. Year 12) at a New Zealand secondary school and passed NCEA Level 2 AND achieved Merit
or Excellence in at least one Art, Design, Technology or Music related subject;
  • International students at high school in another country, who have achieved a level of academic ‘merit’ or ‘excellence’ equivalent to that of the New Zealand education system;
  • International full fee paying students who have studied in an approved University Transfer Programme (“UTP”), and who have achieved
a level of academic ‘merit’ or ‘excellence’ equivalent to that of the New Zealand education system.
  • As a guide, the expectation is a student will show high academic aptitude and also show merit or excellence in at least one Art, Design, Music, Creative Media, or Technology subject. Scholarships are strictly awarded on merit.
  • Applicants must achieve University Entrance for New Zealand.
  • Applicants must meet the required English language requirement for entry into their selected academic programme.
  • Applicants must have received a Conditional Offer of Place in an Approved Bachelor Programme to be awarded the Scholarship.
  • Offers of the Scholarship to NCEA candidates are conditional upon the awardee earning a Merit or Excellence endorsement of their NCEA Level 3 Certificate.

Each Scholarship is valued at NZ $20,000 for a 4-year degree or NZ $15,000 for a 3-year degree

New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Award

Eligibility requirements

New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Award provides postgraduate scholarships for applicants from Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Lao PDR, Burma and Vietnam.

Selection criteria are determined by partner government. Applicants must apply for this scholarship through their home country. Funding is no longer available for dependents. Candidates from Burma need to directly apply to the institution.

New Zealand Pacific Scholarships

New Zealand Pacific Scholarships are open to applicants from government, civil society, private business organizations and qualified secondary school leavers to support both undergraduate and postgraduate study. Applications are welcome from the following countries Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
