A full-time candidate is expected to work 40-50 hours per week on their Doctoral qualification. Part-time applicants are not eligible. Applicants already holding a PhD or other research-based doctoral degree are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are completing an Honours’ or Master’s thesis or research report must be due to submit before they apply for the Doctoral Scholarship.

Consideration is normally given to students with a GPA of 7.5 or better (on a 9point scale). This is above an average grade of A-.

Massey University Creative Arts International Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

The Scholarship is open to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in Creative Arts subjects while studying in New Zealand. The Scholarship is tenable in any of the following College of Creative Arts programmes:

  • Bachelor of Design (Hons);
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons);
  • Bachelor of Maori Visual Arts;
  • Bachelor of Creative Media Production; and
  • Bachelor of Commercial Music, (“Approved Bachelor’s Programme”)

Applicants must be either:

  • International full fee paying students who have completed at least one full year (i.e. Year 12) at a New Zealand secondary school and earned an NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Merit or Excellence AND Excellence in an at least one Art, Design, Technology or Music subject; International students at high school in another country, who have achieved a level of academic ‘excellence’ equivalent to that of the New Zealand education system;
  • International full fee paying students who will have completed a Foundation Studies (or Certificate of University Preparation) programme, and who have achieved a level of academic ‘excellence’ equivalent to that of the New Zealand education system; or
  • As a guide, the expectation is a student will show high academic aptitude and also show excellence in at least one Art, Design, Music, Creative Media, or Technology subject. Scholarships are strictly awarded on merit.
  • Applicants must achieve University Entrance for New Zealand.
  • Applicants must meet the required English language requirement for entry into their selected academic programme.
  • Applicants must have received a Conditional Offer of Place in an Approved Bachelor Programme to be awarded the Scholarship.
  • Offers of the Scholarship to NCEA candidates are conditional upon the awardee earning a Merit or Excellence endorsement of their NCEA Level 3 Certificate.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships (NZIDRS)

Eligibility requirements

In order to apply for the NZIDRS you must meet ALL five eligibility criteria.

These criteria are non-negotiable.

  • You must hold a minimum grade equivalent to a GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale OR an A to A+ average in your most recent or highest post graduate tertiary qualification
  • You must have a confirmed, non-conditional offer of place for a (direct-start) PhD programme at a New Zealand university
  • If you have commenced your PhD studies in New Zealand, your start date must be after 01 July 2015
  • You must conduct your PhD study in New Zealand (not from a distance)
  • You must not hold citizenship or PR status in New Zealand or Australia.

New Zealand ASEAN Scholars Award

Excellence Awards for Latin America

Eligibility requirements

The purpose of this award is to reward students from Latin America and provide financial assistance to study at Massey University.

  • This promotion is valid for any successful applications received for commencement of academic study by 2018.
  • The award is valid for study in the Intensive English and DEEP programmes on the Palmerston North and Wellington Campuses only
  • Students are eligible to receive other home government scholarships (eg. COLFUTURO) in addition to the Massey University Excellence Award
  • The Awards are for Bachelors, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters programmes at Massey University for programmes in the College of Creative Arts and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Category of awards

Students who meet all academic and English language entry requirements into an academic programme will receive a one-off NZ $5,000 award towards their tuition fees.

Students who receive a conditional offer of place subject to meeting the English language entry requirements are eligible for the following tuition fees discounts:

  • For the Intensive English programme, students will receive a 50% tuition fees discount for the first three months of English study.
  • For the Direct Entry English Pathway (DEEP) programme, students will receive a 25% tuition fees discount for the DEEP programme.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

Massey University has a rule for HEC scholars. Please do not bring your family until:

  • You have been in New Zealand for one full year, and
  • You have progressed to the point of being enrolled in the PhD itself

Massey University works with HEC to select candidates to study at Massey. If you are short-listed to be considered for a scholarship to study at Massey, HEC will send Massey your application documents, which will be assessed by supervisors relevant to your area of research interest. Massey University representatives will interview short-listed candidates as part of the selection process.

English Language Awards

Eligibility requirements

Massey University will offer English language awards for 24 weeks of tuition per student to selected students from Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia who have been offered a place in a PhD research degree.

Students will be eligible for the awards if they have been:

  • offered a place as an internal international student in a PhD research programme at Massey University, conditional on meeting English language competency requirements
  • successful in achieving an IELTS level of at least 5.0 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each band or the TOEFL equivalent.
