Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

La Trobe University offers a number of living allowance stipends to students undertaking full-time research degrees through the Australian Government's Research Training Program. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have completed one year of residence in Australia prior to the application closing date.

Applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary studies at a very high level of achievement (i.e. first class honours degree or equivalent) at an Australian university or recognised overseas university. Awards are made according to academic merit.

The RTP Stipend Scholarship provides a living allowance in addition to the RTP Fees Offset Scholarship paid directly to the University by the Australian Government to offset costs for tuition and institutional support of your studies.

La Trobe University Full Fee Research Scholarships (LTUFFRS)

A number of La Trobe University Full Fee Research Scholarships (LTUFFRS) are offered each year for outstanding international applicants. 

LTUFFRS are awarded on the basis of academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified overseas graduates eligible to commence a higher degree (doctoral or Master's) by research. It may be held concurrently with a university research scholarship and applicants for an LTUFFRS are advised to apply for a La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarship (LTUPRS).

The scholarship will cover tuition fees for a period of two years for a Master's by research degree, and four years for a doctoral degree.

La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships (LTUPRS)

These scholarships are normally available for full-time research Master's or PhD candidates. As with the RTP Stipend Scholarship, these scholarships are competitive and are based on academic merit. La Trobe University Postgraduate Research Scholarships are open to citizens of all countries including Australia and New Zealand.

Applicants must have completed at least four years of tertiary studies at a very high level of achievement (i.e. first class honours degree or equivalent) at an Australian university or recognised overseas university.

MIT International Excellence Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Undergraduate applicant

The MIT IE Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate applicants who have:

  • Enrolled as a full time student and be a commencing international student for the trimester to which the benefit applies. The November or summer trimester is not covered by scholarship;
  • Completed Australian Year 12 or equivalent with overall grade average of 70% or more, with no individual result below 65% and have no fail grades recorded (no exceptions will be considered);
  • IELTS (academic) result with an overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5. Documentary evidence of a current (test date within two years of date of application) IELTS certification must accompany the application;
  • Student submission – Each application must be accompanied by a 500-800 words essay outlining why receipt of the scholarship in important; and
  • Not be sponsored by organisations or governments and have.

 Postgraduate applicant

The MIT IE Scholarships are awarded to post graduate applicants who have:

  • Enrolled as a full time student and be a commencing international student for the trimester to which the benefit applies. The November or summer trimester is not covered by scholarship;
  • Completed as a minimum Australian three years undergraduate degree or overseas equivalent (NOOSR guide) with overall grade average of 70% or more, with no individual result below 65% and have no fail grades recorded (no exceptions will be considered)
  • IELTS (academic) result with an overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5. Documentary evidence of a current (test date within two years of date of application) IELTS certification must accompany the application;
  • Student submission – Each application must be accompanied by a 500-800 words essay outlining why receipt of the scholarship is important.

Application details

Closing Dates: Applications for the continuation (retention of Scholarship) must be lodged by 4.30pm on the Friday of the week immediately before the classes start in the subsequent trimester.

Value details

Successful applicants who are awarded a scholarship will receive a fee deduction of equivalent to 20% of the tuition fee of a program he or she is enrolled for the commencing trimester; March or July (November trimester if not eligible). This scholarship is not transferable to another Institute’s campus

David Myers Research Scholarship

Each year the University offers the highest University-ranked graduate research scholarship applicants in each College the David Myers Research Scholarship. The scholarship is open to outstanding individuals, regardless of discipline or nationality.

There is no separate application for this scholarship, all applicants for an RTP or LTUPRS scholarship will automatically be considered.

Value details

Benefits of the scholarship include a top-up of AUD $5,000 per annum for two years full-time study for a Master’s degree, or three years full-time study for a PhD; a research support grant of up to AUD $3,000 per annum to assist with costs such as laboratory consumables, fieldwork and attendance at conferences; an allowance to assist with costs associated with production of publications, and costs of relocation to undertake the degree.

Fong Tam Yuen Leung Medical Research Fellowship

This prestigious fellowship, established by the Fong Family Foundation, will be awarded to an outstanding student from China to undertake a PhD at La Trobe University in a medical research field.

The fellowship aims to further knowledge in medical research, to provide training for an outstanding graduate researcher, and to establish collaborative linkages in the field between Australia and China. The recipient of the fellowship will undertake a research project at La Trobe University in collaboration with a research university or institute in China, and will spend time at the Chinese institution during the project.

MIT Academic Achievement Scholarship

Eligibility requirements


To be eligible to receive and retain an MIT Academic Achievement Scholarship (Scholarship) the applicant must:

  • Be an international student enrolled as a full time student in the trimester to which the benefit would apply;
  • Have achieved an average overall percentage of 75.0% or more, with no individual result below 70.0% in the preceding trimester and have no fail grades recorded (no exceptions will be considered);
  • Have IELTS (academic) result with an overall score of 7.0 with no band less than 6.5. Documentary evidence of a current (test date within two years of date of application) IELTS certification must accompany the application;
  • Have completed at least (a minimum) of two trimesters full-time as per course requirements of the program at MIT;
  • Have a minimum attendance record of 80% in all scheduled classes;
  • Student submission – Each application must be accompanied by a 500-800 words essay outlining why receipt of the scholarship is important;
  • Have made the fee payment for the subsequent trimester’s full-time enrolment.
  • Not be sponsored by other organisations or governments; 
  • Have submitted a completed application form before the closing date; and
  • Have maintained enrolment in the course in which they commenced.

Application details

  • Applicants will be required to complete the  Scholarship Form in addition to the normal program Application Form.
  • Applications will only be considered if the applicant fulfils all the eligibility criteria; submits the application before the closing date; and has made the fee payment for the subsequent trimester full-time enrolment.
  • The same process must be repeated for any subsequent trimester scholarship application for renewal (where applicable).
     

Value details

Successful applicants who are awarded a scholarship will receive a one-off payment equivalent to 30% of the tuition fee for the course in which the student is enrolled.
