GSHSS International Scholarship and Bursary

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • have applied to a graduate coursework program at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • be a citizen of India, Japan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, or Thailand

Selection criteria

  • Selection is based on academic merit and scholarships are allocated on a competitive basis.

Applicable study areas

Historical, philosophical, political and social studies; Language, literature and cultural studies

Application details

No application is required. You will be automatically considered for this award for Semester 1 entry if you applied to a GSHSS degree by 31 October; or for Semester 2 entry if you apply to a GSHSS degree by 31 March.

Value details

Fee remission of 25 or 50% for the duration of the course, or a one-off bursary of AUD $5000.

Alex Chernov Scholarship

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be an international student from India, and
  • have applied for, and been offered a place in a Masters-level course from within the various specialist legal areas of the Melbourne Law Masters program at Melbourne Law School:
  1. if commencing in the start-year intake (March), your application for your chosen course must be submitted by 31 October the year prior.
  2. if commencing in the mid-year intake (July), your application for your chosen course must be submitted by 30 April of the same year.

Selection criteria

Selection for this scholarship is based on academic merit.

Application details

Students offered a place in a Masters-level course from the Melbourne Law Masters program at Melbourne Law School, who applied for the course by 31 October the year prior (for start-year intake) and 30 April of the same year (for mid-year intake) will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

AG Whitlam International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • A citizen from one of the designated countries (for Semester 1: Sri Lanka and Bangladesh; for Semester 2: India, Vietnam and Bangladesh)
  • Completed an approved Year 12 program or equivalent in a country other than Australia that meets the eligibility requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce
  • Students who meet the eligibility criteria are automatically considered

Selection criteria

Selection is made based on academic merit (ie the results you achieved in your most recent years of study).

No application is required. You will be automatically considered for this award.

Value details

Up to 50% fee remission for the duration of the Bachelor of Commerce (up to 300 points).

Bachelor of Arts International Scholarship

Amy Gaye Cowper Tennent Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be a graduate of The University of Melbourne who is pursuing graduate studies in English Literature

Recipients are required to:

  • accept online within 21 days
  • write two letters of appreciation to the donor/committee (upon acceptance and after completion)
  • submit a final report

Selection criteria

Consideration will also be given to applicants who wish to pursue their studies at an overseas university or other tertiary institution. The scholarship may be held concurrently with any other award.

  • outline of proposed planned activities that will be undertaken through the scholarship
  • current academic record
  • two academic references
  • any other information to support application that may assist the committee in making its decision

Barbara Bishop Hewitt Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • have graduated from a course in classical music from the Faculty of Fine Art and Music within the last five years
  • be planning to undertake further study in Australia or overseas within the next 18 months

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed on the basis of:

  • artistic and academic merit
  • career aspirations
  • travel and study plan
  • likely success in completing the proposed course of study / benefitting from the travel plan.

A E Floyd Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • have graduated from music at any level at the University, or at another university or institution approved for the purpose by the University, within the last five years.

Selection criteria

Eligible applicants will be assessed on artistic and academic merit, career aspirations, their travel and study plan, financial need and likely success in completing the proposed course of study.

Willem Snoek Conservation Award

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be enrolled in a course of study or research in the field of heritage conservation at the University of Melbourne's Grimwade Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation. Joint applications are accepted.

Recipients are required to:

  • Accept the award online within 21 days
  • Acquit the project in line with the stated aims of the application
  • Submit a final report within 21 days of completion of the project
  • The project should be completed, with reports submitted, by 1 June in the year following the presentation of the award.

Application details

Submit an online application. Proposals should identify a cultural materials conservation project and should outline the scope of the project, provide a plan and timeline, explain the level of innovation demonstrated by the project and outline how it will have an impact within relevant communities.

Eligible applicants must complete an online application including:

  • 500-word project proposal
  • Budget outline (no more than one page)
  • Plan and timeline (no more than one page)
  • Letters of support from partners (if necessary)
  • Letter of reference
  • Current academic record/ transcript (or some other form of evidence showing you meet eligibility).

Human Rights Scholarship

Study level

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a Master or Doctorate by research degree at the University of Melbourne
  • intend to undertake graduate research in the field of Human Rights
  • be committed to the peaceful advancement of respect for human rights that extends beyond academic studies (such as voluntary work and/or work experience);
  • have not already completed a research qualification at the same or higher level as the course for which a scholarship is sought
  • intend to study as a full-time student unless there are compassionate or compelling circumstances that prevent you from undertaking full-time study
  • not have previously received a Human Rights Scholarship

Selection criteria

Eligible applicants are selected on the basis of academic merit, the area of study in and level of commitment to human rights, and the strength of supporting documentation.

Melbourne Humanitarian Access Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

Undergraduate applicants

  • have applied for or be the holder of an Australian temporary protection (or asylum) visa
  • have completed Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate in Australia
  • have applied for a University of Melbourne undergraduate course via VTAC for commencement in the year following completion of Australian Year 12 or International Baccalaureate
  • satisfy the course prerequisites and have achieved at least the minimum ATAR score for the University of Melbourne course
  • not have undertaken any tertiary studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a Year 12 program).

Graduate applicants

  • have applied for or be the holder of an Australian temporary protection (or asylum) visa
  • have applied for a University of Melbourne graduate degree by coursework
  • satisfy the course prerequisites and have achieved at least the minimum entry score for the University of Melbourne course

Selection criteria

This scholarship is offered to the students with the highest entry score, where there are more candidates than scholarships available or more than one candidate with a preference for the same degree course.

You must submit an online application form by the closing date. As part of the application you will need to attach evidence of your current visa status and provide a brief statement on how the scholarship will benefit you.

Melbourne Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand and not a permanent resident of Australia
  • have applied for an eligible graduate coursework degree
  • not be in receipt of any other tuition fee remission scholarship or sponsorship which, in combination with the Melbourne Graduate Scholarship, exceeds 100% of tuition fees

Eligible graduate coursework degrees are:

  • Any Master degree by coursework offered by the Melbourne Business School, Melbourne School of Design and Melbourne School of Engineering
  • Executive Master of Arts, Master of Translation and Master of International Journalism offered by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Graduate Certificate of Public Administration offered by Melbourne School of Government
  • Melbourne Law Masters offered by Melbourne Law School

Selection criteria

Eligible candidates are selected on the basis of academic merit.

Applicable study areas

Architecture, building and planning; Commerce, economics and management; Engineering; Historical, philosophical, political and social studies; Language, literature and cultural studies; Law, legal studies and criminology; Sciences and mathematics.

Application details

Applications are only required for the Master of Teaching offered by the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. Apply online. All other scholarships are by automatic consideration.

Value details

The scholarship provides fee remissions of between 25% and 100% of tuition fees for the duration of your course.

John Hodgson Scholarship (Science)

This scholarship supports students currently studying or commencing a Bachelor of Agriculture, or in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine who can demonstrate academic achievement.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be enrolled in, or enrolled to commence study in a Bachelor of Agriculture or in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Please note scholars are not eligible to receive both a William Allen Stewart Bursary and a William Allen Stewart Scholarship.

  • have applied for a University of Melbourne undergraduate course via VTAC for commencement in the year following completion of Australian Year Twelve or International Baccalaureate
  • not have previously undertaken any tertiary studies (excluding extension studies completed as part of a Year 12 program).

Selection criteria

The Melbourne Chancellor's Scholarship is awarded on the basis of merit and guaranteed to all students who satisfy the undergraduate course prerequisites and:

  • achieved an ATAR of at least 99.90, or
  • intend to undertake the Bachelor of Music and achieved an ATAR of at least 99.85 and achieved an audition score of A+ , or
  • are of Indigenous Australian descent and achieved an ATAR of at least 90

Eligible students who have applied for admission to the University via VTAC will be automatically considered for the Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship.
