Hey there ! Here’s a Quick Look into my life and experiences as an international student living in Leicester and studying at De Montfort University. As a woman of colour living alone on the opposite side of the world from home , it was important to me to study in a safe city and Leicester is exactly that . I walk home late at night from the library and around the city in the summer on my own and never worry about anything. I also often take walks in the different parks by myself in the late afternoon and the people are always friendly and I always feel safe as a woman on my own. The same sense of safety is on campus and the security team is always available although I’ve never had to use them. The city itself is a student hub and caters for all the students from both universities based here. Most stores and restaurants have discounts for students and are financially friendly. There are many fast food places you can pop into before and after classes and we are lucky that the city centre is a quick 10 minute walk from our university . That aside there are also a lot of fun things to get involved in for an avid social life which is essential to a fun university experience . One of my favorite things about Leicester is how diverse and multicultural the city is and this is reflected in the different cuisine available . I’m South African and have some how fallen in love with Turkish food recently and before that I was obsessed with Vietnamese Pho and Greek gyros. In the last few years I’ve had from all over the world and have had the opportunity to experience little pieces of different cultures. My current favourite place that you must try if ever you’re in Leicester is Etci Baba it’s a Turkish restaurant and also the giggling squid which is Thai that has been my all time favourite since last year .

Hey there! Leicester, as a student city, is incredibly welcoming and diverse, making it a fantastic place for international students like myself. It's a city that truly caters to its student population, offering a variety of student-friendly venues and activities. One of my favourite places to visit is PAI, an Italian restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and warm, hospitable atmosphere. The food is always delicious and people are very welcoming. For those who enjoy nature and tranquillity, the banks of the River Soar and the Aylestone Meadows offer stunning landscapes and a peaceful escape from the hustle of city life. I often find myself there, studying or just enjoying the natural beauty. The city centre, vibrant and full of life, is another one of my favourite spots. It's a great place to shop, eat, and explore local culture. The city centre is always full of activity, making it a lively place for students. Leicester is also a safe city with a strong sense of community, which is important for both domestic and international students. As an international student myself, I appreciate how the city's welcoming atmosphere has helped me to feel at home.

Hello there 👋🏻 My beloved spot in Leicester is the New Walk area — a captivating and scenic pedestrian pathway stretching from the city centre to Victoria Park. Lush with blossoming nature and adorned with elegant architecture, bars, and restaurants, it offers a blessed escape to refresh my mind, catch up with friends, or sink in the reminiscent charm of refined British architecture. A close contender for my affection is Maurizio's Pizzeria, an authentic Italian gem renowned for its unbeatable pizzas and cosy ambience reminiscent of home. Introduced to me by a friend, Maurizio's has become my go-to for indulging in Italian cuisine and enjoying intimate evenings with friends. Its welcoming atmosphere makes it a haven unlike any other. Leicester earns its stripes as an exceptional student city thanks to three standout features: its strategic location, vibrant and diverse community, and affordability.  To begin with, Leicester boasts an enviable geographical position, with easy access to three major airport cities, facilitating seamless travel connections. Furthermore, the city centre is a hub of convenience, providing everything one could desire within easy reach. Nestled in student accommodations mere steps away from both the university and downtown, I have relished the luxury of strolling to my destinations, a stark contrast to the lengthy commutes I endured in the past.  Moreover, Leicester teems with a diverse population of students and internationals, fostering a sense of security and belonging that puts newcomers at ease.  Lastly, affordability is a defining trait of Leicester, from its budget-friendly student accommodations to its reasonable cost of living and entertainment options. This economic advantage allows students like myself to fully immerse in university life without financial strain.

Hiya! I would love to share any of my experiences in Leicester and Leicestershire since being a student at De Montfort University. Favourite places in Leicester As already mentioned Leicester is full of activities for students. Ranging from mini golf, cinema, escape rooms, bowling, shopping, museums and sport stadiums. Some of my favourite places and activities to do is mini golf and in the city there is Treetop golf and Caddyshackers which are great fun with friends. In addition I love to go to Roxy Ball Room in Leicester which is a great games bar full of fun games to do! I also love to go to new restaurants and I would definitely recommend KAI, PAI, Mowgli and the Globe - again a great way to hang out with friends and try delicious food. I also love sports and I have been a fan of Leicester’s local rugby team Leicester Tigers and fortunately been to quite a few matches as the stadium is in the centre. There are also plenty of shops in the city centre with some being high street, popular brands and some smaller independent shops which are unique to Leicester. How does it cater to students? The city caters to students in various ways, as said above it caters by having plenty of activities and opportunities for students to engage within the local community. In addition Leicester is known to be friendly and welcoming and is recognised as a student city and offerers various student discounts and student nights at establishments. I would also say that opening and closing times are quite flexible for shops, supermarkets and gyms and therefore is easier to fit in social activities whilst also having a day of classes. Leicester city is also known to be quite affordable and has been ranked multiple times as in the top 10 affordable cities in the UK. Security Regarding security at DMU specifically this is a top priority. We have an official security team who provide a safe, effective and an efficient environment for all staff and students. There are numerous services that the team provide such as 24 hours, seven days a week active service, CCTV surveillance system and working in partnership with the local government and Leicestershire Police and there are more! The security team are approachable and friendly and can be found on campus in person but can also be contacted via phone. There is also social media for the DMU security Team and regular posts regarding security, how to stay safe, tips and contact details etc are found online and promoted on campus. What can international students expect Our university is a proudly international community in the heart of an exciting, and diverse city. International students can expect to be welcomed by friendly faces of fellow students and staff and be enhanced by the opportunities that DMU presents. Whether these opportunities are through enhanced in depth courses, the culture in our community and / or the amazing career opportunities. Our modern campus is a vibrant and safe place to explore and make home whilst studying.

Leicester is packed with things to do. Activity wise there are lots of places like mini golf, bowling, laser tag, escape rooms and axe throwing these are few examples of some things around in Leicester. My personal favourite would have to be a bit of mini golf with friends as it’s a good laugh. The night of Leicester is also very busy and there are lots of places you can go if that something you are into. Personally I like to go to pubs and bars to chill out with my friends but if you like clubbing more than Leicester has lots of places you can go out too! Also there are few shopping places like Highcross and Fosse park! These can be nice days out or just a place to go for a walk with very well know brands. Fosse park is a little outside the centre of Leicester but is a nice spot to change the scenery. While In Leicester there are lots of places to eat and a massive range of place all around town and some other area of Leicester which is all accessible within 10-15 minutes really! As Leicester is diverse there are a lot of restaurants that actually cater for different types of cultures and religions.
