About Northumbria University

Northumbria University is ideally located in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the North East of England. Located at the City Campus, Northumbria Students’ Union (NSU) serves as a hub for student life. It offers a variety of outstanding facilities, including bars, entertainment venues, coffee shops, workspaces, relaxation areas, and meeting rooms. Run by students for students, NSU provides a range of support services and activities, including over 100 clubs and societies that cater to various interests and cultural backgrounds.

Graduate outcomes

Northumbria ranks in the UK top 40 for graduate prospects, both for the number of students achieving a First or 2:1 grade and for the above-average number of students in high-skilled jobs or further study within 15 months of leaving (The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023). Northumbria puts more graduates into highly skilled jobs in the North East than any other university, playing a huge part in the regeneration of Newcastle and the North East.

Based on estimated turnover, the university is also ranked 5th in the UK (and top in the North East) for graduate start-up businesses. Over the last 14 years, the university has continually ranked within the top 10, according to the Higher Education Business Community Interaction Survey 2021/22 (HEBCIS).

What's new

Northumbria has recently announced campus investment that aligns with the University Strategy for 2030 to support the delivery of its vision for research and education with a world-class student experience. Work began in the Summer of 2023 with an ongoing period of investing in and securing existing space across its Newcastle Campus. The main areas of development include:

Centre for Health and Society Equity (CHASE): This GBP 100m brand-new building will be situated to the north of City Campus and to provide state-of-the-art teaching facilities, clinical skills laboratories and simulated environments.
North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST): A GBP 50m world-leading space skills, research, and technology centre. NESST will house world-leading space experts and unite industry with academia to transform the UK space economy.
Heart of Campus: Refurbishing the students’ union, updating the exterior of the library and repurposing of the existing Sandyford Building.
West of Campus: Opening of College House and establishing it as the home of Humanities at Northumbria.

Additionally, Northumbria’s commitment to carbon reduction and net zero in 2040 has been embedded in all campus development plans.

Scholarships & funding

Northumbria University, Newcastle offers a number of scholarships for international students. Students are encouraged to use the scholarship search to check their eligibility against the list of specific terms and conditions.

If any students are interested in studying at the London Campus, they may be eligible for a scholarship or bursary to help fund their studies. Scholarships at Northumbria University, London are awarded on a case-by-case basis.

International students will need to provide some proof of funding when applying for their course at Northumbria, but that doesn’t mean they are then left unsupported financially once they have arrived. The student support teams include help with financial matters, such as advice on what funding options may be available and guidance on finding work to fit around studies, so that students can make their budget situation even more comfortable. Entry requirements

Northumbria University accepts and welcomes applications from the UK and worldwide with a range of qualifications. Students who have completed qualifications outside the UK can find out how these compare by looking at the university’s breakdown of accepted qualifications by country.

Prospective students should note that Northumbria’s website contains general entry guidelines for students. Actual requirements may vary depending on students’ chosen course of study, and some courses may have specific or additional entry criteria. Full details are available in Northumbria’s course directory. Decisions for entry will also be based on personal statements and previous study information, not just students’ final course grading. As a result, students are encouraged to put time and effort into their application, to make sure they have the best chance of success.

Teaching quality

Northumbria has achieved a silver rating overall in the 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) thanks to the inspiring teaching and research-rich education experience by students and the outstanding range of opportunities this creates.

The university's student outcomes were awarded a gold rating for being "outstanding", while its student experience was judged as "very high quality", attaining a silver award.

Northumbria also places 15th in the UK for 'value added' for students whilst at university. Value added is an analysis of students' degree results with their entry qualifications to show how effectively they are taught (The Guardian University Guide 2025).

Beyond the external recognition, the university simply works hard to attract the best talent for its faculty – bringing in experienced lecturers and tutors who are not only passionate about their respective subject areas, but also about teaching and their ability to help shape the next generation of leaders.

Students can expect to learn from engaged, motivated staff whilst making use of modern equipment that’s of the same standard being used by professionals in their field.
