About Queen Margaret University Edinburgh

Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh was founded in 1875 and was initially known as the Edinburgh School of Cookery. The University strives to adopt a person-centred approach to teaching and learning, ultimately aiming to shape a better world through education, innovation and research.

QMU’s academic offerings revolve around those subject areas where the University can offer something distinctive – in business, creative arts, healthcare, management and enterprise, social sciences, and primary and secondary teaching. Courses are offered at two schools: The School of Arts, Social Sciences and Management, and the School of Health Sciences. 

Over the years, QMU has fostered a strong ethos of partnership and collaboration. The University’s modern, purpose-built campus houses high-tech facilities, including an innovative learning resource centre offering IT and library services and a variety of learning spaces. The campus also offers sports facilities and en-suite student accommodation.

Sports & Societies at QMU offers students numerous opportunities to pursue sports such as badminton, football and rugby, or participate in popular activities like costume design, dance and musical theatre. The societies are a great place to meet like-minded people who have similar interests.

QMU’s campus is easily accessible from central Edinburgh, taking under six to reach minutes by train. Bus services are also frequent, and the area is bordered by the main east coast rail line to London. The campus serves as a gateway to East Lothian in  Scotland’s central belt, an area marked by beaches, historic countryside and plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits, from golfing and horse-riding, to surfing and wakeboarding.

Graduate outcomes

Queen Margaret University provides a number of scholarship and funding opportunities which are available to international students. A full list of up-to-date scholarships available at QMU can be found on the University’s scholarships information page.

QMU international scholarships are competitive scholarships valued at GBP 3,000 for new students who are commencing the first year of an undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree. The scholarship is awarded against the cost of tuition fees and is available to students who are self-financing an international tuition fee of GBP 12,500 or above. While applications can be made by students who have already applied to study at the University, international students are not required to hold an offer from QMU before applying for the scholarship. The scholarship is valid for a single year of study.

QMU additionally offers a 10 percent discount on all tuition fees at postgraduate level for alumni of the University who have previously graduated from undergraduate degree programmes based at QMU’s Edinburgh campus.

What’s New

Queen Margaret University launches a pioneering new mentorship project

QMU has been recognised nationally as a top university for student career mentorship for many years. Building on this acumen, the University has recently launched an innovative new mentorship project which follows the success of its groundbreaking employer mentoring programme.

QMU’s Rotational Leadership Mentoring Programme (ROME) is the first of its kind in the education sector. The dynamic new programme is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn about the various career pathways and industries available to them through pairings with expert mentors. Students are offered the opportunity to concentrate on key professional areas via ROME, with specialist guidance from four mentors as they develop their critical thinking, decision making, team building, analytical prowess, and leadership skillset.

Queen Margaret University transforms its learning and teaching spaces with GBP 2.1 million investment

The QMU Musselburgh campus was newly built in 2007, and the University is continuing to invest in the development of its teaching and learning facilities. The Future Spaces project has resulted in GBP 2.1 million being newly invested into the campus learning resource centre and four classroom areas. This enhancement project will see an expansion of the capacity for teaching activity, socialising, and independent and collaborative student learning.
