Founded in 1976 with the goal of drawing the best talent and practices from around the world, St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine has become a centre for academic excellence worldwide. SGU has contributed over 22,0001 physicians to the global physician workforce, with students, graduates, and faculty from over 150 countries.
SGU School of Medicine has a Four-Year Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree programme and offers Five-, Six-, and Seven-Year Medical Degree (MD) Tracks. Students have a unique opportunity to begin their medical education in Grenada or the UK. They can complete their clinical rotations in over 75 affiliated hospitals in the US or the UK. SGU is committed to student success within an international academic environment, and these enduring connections offer students the opportunity to acquire vital international exposure.
Thanks to an international partnership with Northumbria University, SGU provides the opportunity for students to earn an MD degree and complete up to three years in Newcastle in the UK. The SGU of Grenada School of Medicine and Northumbria University offer a Four-Year MD programme, as well as Five- and Six-Year MD Tracks. This partnership has welcomed more than 2,500 medical students to Newcastle since commencing in 2007.

International students studying at SGU may be eligible for various scholarships, grants and bursaries. These includes the Global Scholars Bursary and the International Peace Bursary.
Through the Global Scholars Bursary, students may be eligible for partial-tuition awards when joining the Four-Year MD programme with the SGU of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University (NU). To be eligible for this bursary, students must be able to demonstrate both their academic excellence and financial need. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
Through the International Peace Bursary, students may be eligible for partial-tuition awards to support work designed to enhance medical care systems. To be eligible, students must demonstrate financial need and the ability to fund the remainder of their tuition fees. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
There are a range of entry options and tracks for students who wish to study at SGU, and the university caters to students from all academic backgrounds.
Four-Year MD programme students must hold a bachelor’s degree in the requisite sciences. Any student who is not a native English speaker will either need an undergraduate degree from a native English-speaking country, or one of the following scores in a recognised English proficiency test:
International students are exempt from the MCAT admission requirement.
For the Five-Year MD Track (Four-Year MD and one year preclinical), the Six-Year MD Track (Four-Year MD and two years preclinical), and the Seven-Year MD Track (four-year MD and three years preclinical) there are a range of qualifications accepted by SGU. These include advanced levels, approved foundation programmes, full IB diplomas, secondary school diplomas and IGCSEs. For full and detailed information on entry requirements for specific preclinical tracks, students should consult the university’s dedicated admissions page. Should students have any questions or queries about entry requirements for SGU, they are encouraged to contact the admissions team directly.
Students can start courses at SGU at several points throughout the year, and incoming students are admitted on a rolling basis. The School of Medicine offers new intakes in August, January, and April every year.
The university's commitment to a personalised learning experience ensures that students receive high levels of contact time and support throughout their studies.
Students are instructed and supported by 1,600 clinical faculty members and 450 additional faculty members at SGU’s Grenada campus. Professors at the School of Medicine (SOM) bring a wealth of academic and professional experience to their teaching, and all have an MD, PhD, or equivalent qualification.
SGU’s SOM has received accreditation for decades, and as a result, SGU medical graduates have continuously been eligible to practice in the US. The Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC), SGU SOM’s accreditor, is recognised by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME) and the U.S. National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA). The WFME’s recognition of GMDC ensures that SGU SOM students have access to USMLE Step exams, US clinical rotations, eligibility for US residency placement, and the physician licensing process in the US and many other countries worldwide.

Students who start their medical studies at SGU with a bachelor’s degree can follow the traditional Four-Year MD programme. There are also three preclinical tracks leading to the Four-Year MD programme. Preclinical tracks are foundational phases of study which prepare students for the subsequent advanced medical phase of the MD programme. The former involves the study of preclinical sciences, humanities, and social sciences. During the preclinical phase, students will undertake essential coursework which will prepare them for medical school.
Basic Sciences are the first two years of the Four-Year MD programme. Students can complete the entire two years in Grenada or study partly in the UK at Northumbria University. The teaching of Basic Sciences is delivered through traditional lectures, laboratory sessions, small group sessions, and case-based learning exercises. Schools operating within the Basic Medical Sciences Faculty at SGU include:
The final two years of the MD programme are spent at hospitals and clinics across the US and UK.
