Library services

UAL students have access to the libraries at all six colleges, and their resources. The collections offer great opportunities for subject-specific and cross-disciplinary learning and research.

Academic support & research

The university offers a wide range of support to help students with their studies and research at UAL. This includes face-to-face tutorials, workshops and online learning materials covering many topics. Support is available to all students at UAL.

Digital tools

Several digital tools are available to help students throughout their time at UAL. This ranges from free software to online tools for showcasing their work and starting a business.

UAL’s tool named Portfolio is an exclusive new platform for students to showcase their work and connect with peers from across all subject disciplines at the University. They will also be able to present their work to potential employers and partners.

Language Centre

The Language Centre offers English language development support to full-time international students, as well as pre-sessional English classes to prepare students to start their course. They also provide evening classes in modern languages and intercultural and communication training.

The English courses are British Council accredited and the pre-sessional courses are BALEAP accredited. Find out about the English language requirements for the courses offered at UAL.

University of the Arts London Student Services staff provide free, professional and confidential service to UAL students and, where appropriate, to prospective students who are considering applying for courses at the University.

Student Services works in conjunction with colleagues responsible for academic support as well as with the student welfare mentors at halls of residence. Integrating support from these teams ensures that support and advice is appropriate and relevant, enabling students to succeed.

Student Advice Service

For questions about money matters, immigration or a host of other issues, UAL’s Student Advice Service offers personalised advice and guidance. They can also direct students to additional support, where needed.

Counselling

University of the Arts London offers free, one-to-one, confidential counselling to students at each college. Some areas where counselling can be helpful include anxiety/stress, course-related problems, and homesickness.

Health Advice

The Health Advice Service provides advice and information to students at the University about any aspect of health and wellbeing. Advice is available for students who have questions or concerns about healthy eating, physical well-being, and mental health.

Disability Service

Get confidential advice and support through the Disability Service. Access is available to students and prospective students who are, or believe they may be, disabled, dyslexic or have long-term health or mental health conditions. Disability Advisers work with individuals to identify and remove any barriers to study. 

Halls of residence are available to all students who have been offered a place on a course at UAL. Life in the halls of residence is a communal and enriching experience for the students. UAL's Accommodation Services will help students find the most suitable and convenient place to live, in a fully student-focused environment, within easy reach of their college.

Living in halls

All of UAL’s halls are staffed 24 hours a day and either have a residence manager or accommodation manager who manages the team in each hall.

• Residence and accommodation managers are responsible for the day-to-day management of the building and the welfare of students. Students can always contact their manager for help with anything to do with their halls, advice on their local area, or if they just need someone to chat with.

• Halls reps live and work in the halls. They provide peer-to-peer support throughout the year and run the events programme. It’s their job to make sure students have the best university experience possible.

The Social Programme is completely coordinated by students, which makes it unique, inclusive and empowering for everyone involved. The majority of events are free and the programme pioneers campaigns and community projects across every hall. 

Careers and Employability empowers UAL students and graduates to make a living doing what they love. Working collaboratively with UAL courses, enhances students’ employability and creative attributes through experiential learning and access to industry.

Careers and Employability offers online career advice to help students in their job search and application process. This includes information on CV writing, how to perform during an interview and how to build a strong portfolio.

UAL supports students and graduates to find jobs and internships in the creative industries. There are many avenues for students and graduates to find support for their careers:

• Arts Temps is UAL's recruitment agency, providing students and alumni with a range of flexible job opportunities within UAL and with external businesses.  With opportunities in the creative and non-creative industries, Arts Temps is accredited as a London Living Wage employer.

• Creative Opportunities is a leading online jobs board, run by UAL’s Careers and Employability team, advertising paid jobs and internships across the creative industries. All the roles offered pay an amount equivalent to or higher than the UK National Minimum Wage.

• Free events and workshops are designed to help students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to get the best jobs, go freelance, or start their own businesses. Careers and Employability host annual events like Global Enterprise Week and Starting Out, offering free support and accessible to all students.
