Applicants must apply to study at UBC at either its Vancouver or Okanagan campus following UBC's normal procedures and deadlines. Zonta International’s Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Eligibility requirements

Zonta International’s Amelia Earhart Fellowships memorialize famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing degrees and careers in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering

Women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering are eligible. Students must be registered in a full-time Ph.D./doctoral program and completed at least one year of that program or have received a master’s degree in an aerospace-related field at the time the application is submitted.

Applicants must not graduate from their Ph.D. or doctoral program before April 2020. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the Fellowship. Members and employees of Zonta International or the Zonta International Foundation are also not eligible to apply for the Fellowship. Note that previous Amelia Earhart Fellows are not eligible to apply to renew the Fellowship for a second year.

Four Year Doctoral Fellowship

Eligibility requirements

Four Year Fellowships may be held by international students. In general, the fellowships are offered to students beginning their first year of PhD, DMA, or MDPhD studies, but may be offered to continuing students. 4YF funding may be offered for up to four years, but the duration of funding may be less in some circumstances. In all cases, funding is subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Students holding the following Tri-Agency awards automatically become 4YF designates: Vanier Scholarships, Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD), CIHR Doctoral Research Awards, NSERC Doctoral Postgraduate Scholarships (PGSD), and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships. Doctoral students who obtain Tri-Agency scholarships may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the external award start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

Other major external scholarship winners who are selected as 4YF designates may be eligible for 4YF tuition coverage and will receive 4YF stipend and tuition support once their external scholarship funding ends, until four years after the 4YF start date or until the end of their 5th year in Doctoral program, whichever comes first.

To be considered for Four Year Fellowship funding, students submit an application for admission to the appropriate graduate program at UBC.  All PhD, DMA, and MDPhD applicants offered admission are automatically considered for 4YF funding.

Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

This need-and-merit-based award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills, involvement in student affairs and community service, and recognized achievement in other key areas.

Your award may be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study or to degree completion – whichever comes first – provided you achieve satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need, and maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa).

Eligibility

To be considered for the Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award:

  • You must be an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • You must be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school, college, or other university.
  • You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.
  • You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standard).
  • You must demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent you from pursuing a UBC degree.

Please note: If you are nominated for a Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award, you will not be considered for merit-based awards, including International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards.

  • December 1: Submit your award application and complete the online application for admission to UBC. Although you can specify two degree choices in your application, only your first-choice degree will be considered for the purposes of this award.
  • January 31: Meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard.
  • Mid-April: Nominees will be informed if they have received an award.

International Four-Year Doctoral Partial Tuition Award

Eligibility requirements

The International Four-Year Doctoral Partial Tuition Award (IDPT) is available to incoming international doctoral students who have a first-class admission GPA and PhD transfer students with a first-class GPA at the time of transfer to their PhD program. The Award pays the tuition differential between international and domestic tuition for eligible students. The award provides funding for up to a total of four years (48 months) per awardee.

 ELIGIBILITY

  • Awardees must hold a valid student visa and be registered full time when they begin their UBCO doctoral program
  • UBC students who advance/transfer from a master’s to a doctoral program without completing their master’s degree will only be paid out the IDPT for the terms they are registered in a doctoral program up to a maximum of 48 months total calculated from the beginning of their master’s program
  • Awardees must have an admission GPA of first-class standing
  • International Doctoral Fellowship awardees are not eligible for the IDPT
  • Recipients of the IDPT must maintain registration as an international student to remain eligible for the IDPT

International Major Entrance Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC. Students receive their IMES when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study. The number and level of these scholarships awarded each year vary, depending on available funding.

To be considered for the IMES, you must:

  • be a new student to UBC, entering directly from secondary school
  • be an international student who will be studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your IMES eligibility.)
  • demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, intellectual promise, as well as impressive extracurricular and community involvement

Outstanding International Student Award

The Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship awarded to qualified students when they are offered admission to UBC. Students selected for this award show strength academically and display involvement outside of the classroom. 

Eligibility

To be considered for an OIS Award, you must:

  • Be new to UBC, entering directly from secondary school or post-secondary (university or college).
  • Be an international student studying at UBC on a Canadian study permit (student visa). (Changes to your citizenship status will affect your scholarship eligibility.)
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extracurricular involvement.
  • Not be nominated for a need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.

Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

Eligibility requirements

This need-and-merit-based award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, and who would be unable to attend university without financial assistance.

Your award may be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study or to degree completion – whichever comes first – provided you achieve satisfactory academic standing in your faculty, continue to demonstrate financial need, and maintain your Canadian study permit (student visa).

To be considered for the Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award:

Please note: If you are nominated for a Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award, you will not be considered for merit-based awards, including International Major Entrance Scholarships and Outstanding International Student Awards.

  • You must be an international student who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian study permit.
  • You must be graduating or have recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school.
  • You must be applying for your first undergraduate degree.
  • You must meet UBC’s admission requirements, including general and degree-specific requirements and the English Language Admission Standard.

  • You must demonstrate superior academic achievement (achieve all As or equivalent standard) and leadership potential.

  • You must come from a war-torn, politically unstable, or economically disadvantaged region of the world.

  • You must have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and have no financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary education in your own country (because it is unavailable or unattainable) or outside your country (because it is unaffordable).

Vantage One Excellence Award

Eligibility requirements

The awards will be renewed for up to three additional years or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the recipient maintains their status as an international student in Canada. Award winners will have their awards reviewed annually to assess and update academic progress and financial need. The awards will be granted on the basis of academic merit; financial need will also be taken into account. The award is made on the recommendation of UBC Vantage College in consultation with the UBC International Student Initiative.

Graduate Dean's Entrance Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Graduate Dean’s Entrance Scholarships (GDES) are based on merit and offered to incoming full-time thesis-based master’s and doctoral students at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Students who have submitted a complete admission application by the date indicated for each admission period will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

  • Incoming, full-time, thesis-based graduate students
  • Complete admission applications submitted by the application deadline receive priority consideration. Submissions after the deadline will be considered if funding is available
  • Students applying to professional programs (MSN part-time, MSW, M.ED, MDS, and M.ENG) are not eligible for this scholarship
  • Eligible students must have an admission GPA of first-class standing or other exceptional qualifications

  • All applicants that have submitted a complete admission application by the appropriate deadline will be automatically considered for the scholarship.
  • No additional application is required.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS)

Eligibility requirements

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. The Vanier CGS is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years.

  • To be considered for a Vanier CGS, a student must be nominated by only one Canadian university. The Vanier CGS must be held by the student at the university that nominated them. The scholarships are not transferable; they may not be taken to another university
  • Applicants must not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2020 (see calculating months of study)
  • Applicants must have achieved a first-class average in each of the last two years of full-tme study or equivalent
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students are all eligible for the Vanier CGS
  • Students who have held or are currently holding Tri-Agency scholarship funding for their doctoral program are not eligible to apply
  • Applicants do not have to be registered as doctoral students at the time of application, but must be registered as doctoral students at the nominating Canadian university when they take up the Vanier CGS

James E. Axelson Outstanding Graduate Scholar Award

Eligibility requirements

The applicant will have completed a master’s or 4-year bachelor's (honours) degree in a relevant discipline and must:

  • Be applying to enter the first year of a full time PhD program in the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the time of this application. Note that a full application to the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program must accompany this scholarship application.
  • Have a minimum A or equivalent average in each of the last two years of full time study and must meet all the requirements for admission to the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD Program.
  • Have already secured a supervisor at the time of application. Co-supervision is permitted; at least one supervisor must be from the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Submit an application through the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies by the February 15 deadline, and specify the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program as the program to which you are applying.

Submit the following to the UBC-PHAR Pharmacy Graduate Program by the February 15 deadline:

Killam Doctoral Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

The Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes were established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his wife, Dorothy J. Killam, and through gifts made during her lifetime. Their primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts. The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies. It was Mrs. Killam's desire that those selected to receive scholarships: "Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession. A Killam scholar should not be a one-sided person... Special distinction of intellect should be founded upon sound character."

Killam Doctoral Scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC. Approximately 15-20 awards are made each year to the top doctoral candidates in the Affiliated Fellowships competition. At present, the Killam Doctoral Scholarship provides an annual stipend valued at CAN $30,000 for two years plus a CAN $2,000 allowance for research-related travel during the 24 months of the scholarship*.

*Killam Doctoral Scholarships awardees on the UBC-Vancouver campus also become Four Year Fellowship holders and receive additional tuition funding from the 4YF program if they are eligilbe.

To be eligible to apply for Killam Doctoral Scholarship funding, applicants must have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of the start date of the scholarship.

Application details

The Killam Doctoral Scholarships are part of the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition.  To be considered for the Killam Doctoral Scholarships, you must apply for the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition.

Therefore, applicants to the 2020-2021 competition must have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2020.

International Tuition Award

Eligibility requirements

Students are eligible for the International Tuition Award if they meet the following criteria:

  • Students must hold a valid Student Authorization (Study Permit)
  • Students must be registered full-time in one of the eligible graduate programs. For program eligibility and award amount, check your graduate program listing under Graduate Degree Programs (see Tuition / Program Costs box)
  • Students who receive external funding (e.g., their home government, Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship, or other funding agencies like CIDA, WUSC, DAAD, CONACYT, CONICYT, NSF, etc.) for their tuition which is equal to or higher than the value of the International Tuition Award are not eligible. Students who receive external funding toward their tuition which is lower than the value of the International Tuition Award will have their International Tuition Award reduced by the amount of the external tuition funding.

The scholarship is paid in 3 equal instalments - one at the beginning of each term. September and January instalments are assigned in late August each year. May instalment is assigned in late April each year.
