UC International First Year Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

This scholarship recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury. Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas. Applicants must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a UC undergraduate degree programme. Such students who are undertaking, or have completed, a programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply. The scholarship may not be held by students who: have already undertaken partial study in an undergraduate degree programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution; or have applied for Transfer of Credit from a New Zealand tertiary institution to an undergraduate degree programme at UC. Candidates must have applied for admission to the University by 15 August in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University.

Go Canterbury Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the University of Canterbury and Campus Living Villages NZ to support students from Auckland and Wellington in their first year of study at the University of Canterbury. Applicants must be Year 13 students who, in the year of application (or in the previous year if they are on a gap year), are either attending an Auckland or Wellington school or living in the Auckland or Wellington region.

UC College of Engineering International Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students. Applicants may not be:
a. citizens of New Zealand or Australia; or
b. Permanent Residents of Australia; or
c. holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
Applicants must have completed a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a UC undergraduate degree programme before the closing date for applications for the scholarship. By 1 March or by 15 August as applicable, an applicant must have applied to the University for admission to the BE(Hons) programme.

Tenure - 2 years

Lyttelton Port Company Directors' UC Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

This scholarship will be available to applicants who have a parent who, on the application closing date in the year of application, is employed, full-time or part-time, by the Lyttelton Port Company and has been so for not less than 12 months. By 10 December in the year of application, applicants must have enrolled, or have applied to enrol, for full-time study at the University of Canterbury in the subsequent year. ("Full-time" is here defined as undertaking a course load of at least 105 points over a whole year.) Preference will be given to applicants enrolling for undergraduate study for the first time.

Fitzroy Engineering University of Canterbury Engineering Scholarship

Applicants must be intending to enrol full-time in the Engineering Intermediate programme at the University of Canterbury, and must be intending to undertake a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering at the University. Applicants who gain Direct Entry to the First Professional Year of one of the above Engineering programmes will also be considered. Category A scholarships are tenable during full-time study in a programme at the University for an undergraduate degree, in a recipient's first year of enrolment in a degree programme. Candidates for Category A scholarships must:
a. have completed or be completing a university entrance qualification; and
b. have been studying at secondary level in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior).

Category B scholarships are tenable during full-time study at the University in:
a. the final year of a programme for an Honours degree; or
b. any year of a programme for a postgraduate degree or a postgraduate diploma.

UC Mathematics and Statistics High Achievers Award

This scholarship recognises and supports high-achieving students entering their first year of a University of Canterbury Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree programme and majoring in Mathematics or Statistics. Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a university entrance qualification and have studied at secondary level in New Zealand in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior). International students who meet these requirements are eligible to apply. Applicants must intend to: enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree programme at the University; and major in Mathematics and enrol in a specified 100-level Mathematics course; or major in Statistics and enrol in a specified 100-level 1 Statistics course. Recipients who gain direct entry into Year 2 of a BSc or BA degree programme will be exempt from enrolling in the specified courses. The scholarship is tenable for one year.

Lissie Rathbone Scholarships

  • Applicants must be under 19 years of age on 1 December of the year before the year of application. 
  • Applicants must be resident within the territory of the Canterbury Regional Council2 for all of the year preceding the year of tenure of the scholarship.
  • Applicants must have completed, or be completing, a university entrance qualification and must have studied at secondary level in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior). 
  • The scholarship is tenable for up to three years, by students enrolled full-time or part-time at the University in a programme for degree with a major in either English or History.

Geographical Society (Canterbury Branch) Research Grant

This grant is used to assist candidates for a Masters degree in Geography who are likely to incur heavy personal expenses in research for their theses. The grant may be awarded annually by the Council to a student or students on the recommendation of a committee comprising two academic staff members of the Department of Geography (one of whom shall be the Head of the Department) and two members of the committee of the Canterbury Branch of the Geographical Society (one of whom shall be the Chairman of the Branch).

Edward and Isabel Kidson Scholarship

The object of each scholarship is to enable a graduate of a university of New Zealand, who is of good character and who has shown an ability in physics or a combination of physics and mathematics, to undertake further advanced study or research whether in New Zealand or elsewhere, in Meteorology; or, should there be at any time or times no suitable candidate for an award of the scholarship for that purpose, then to undertake further advanced study or research in some other branch of science whether in New Zealand or elsewhere. To assist with doctoral research in Physics and/or Mathematics (preferably Meteorology) in NZ or overseas.

Alabaster Scholarship

Two Charles and Austin Henry Alabaster Scholarships, tenable for one year, shall be offered for competition every year to students in undergraduate Greek and Latin courses. The scholarship is tenable by full-time and part-time students enrolled in a programme for a master's degree at the University of Canterbury. Applicants may be either intending to enrol in a programme for a master's degree at the University or already enrolled in such a programme. This scholarship supports students of high academic achievement who have a significant disability, for study towards a master's degree at the University of Canterbury.

Vida Stout Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

This scholarship supports students studying in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury for the degree of PhD in the areas of limnology or environmental science, preferably of the South Island.

The scholarship will be available to full-time students studying in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Canterbury for the degree of PhD with an emphasis on limnology, or environmental science, preferably of the South Island.
