This scholarship supports students from countries of the Commonwealth who are undertaking postgraduate study at the University of Canterbury, thereby promoting international understanding through education. Students must be enrolled, or will be enrolled, in a full-time programme for a Master’s degree by thesis or a PhD degree at the University of Canterbury. It will be tenable for the time it takes the recipient to complete 1.00 EFTS. Applicants, by 15 May in the year of application, must have met the academic requirements for enrolment at the University of Canterbury in a programme for a Master’s degree by thesis or a PhD degree. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of a country of the Commonwealth.

Auckland Council Chief Economist's Research Scholarship in Economics

Eligibility requirements

The main purpose of this scholarship is to encourage and support postgraduate research in urban economics or in a related field that has particular relevance to local government in New Zealand.

  • At the time of application candidates must be enrolled in a programme of postgraduate study at a New Zealand university.
  • Applicants may be enrolled as either full time or part time students.
  • The postgraduate programme must be in the area of urban economics or a related field - Universities NZ and Auckland Council reserve the right to determine the eligibility of a particular area of study.
  • A thesis, dissertation or research report must be a requirement of the postgraduate programme.

The scholarship provides funds to support research as part of a programme of postgraduate study at a New Zealand university. Research can be in one of two categories:

  • Research that is directly relevant to the Auckland Plan, Auckland Council’s Unitary Plan or Economic Development Strategy or 
  • Research that addresses a topic that is relevant to and informs the economic knowledge of local government in New Zealand

Joan Burns Memorial Scholarship in History

This scholarship recognises and supports academic excellence by honours and master's students in History at the University of Canterbury. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree programme or in Part 1 of a Master of Arts degree programme. As funds permit, one or more scholarships are available annually to applicants who are enrolled full-time. The scholarship is tenable for the period necessary to complete 1.00 EFTS of enrolment while the recipient is enrolled full-time in either a Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree programme or Part 1 of a Master of Arts degree programme.

Gateway Antarctica's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Scholarship in Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Scholarship was founded in 2001 in support of research and teaching in Antarctic Studies in recognition of Antarctica as a continent devoted to peace and research. PhD or master's thesis students are eligible. The scholar is required to undertake research concerning a matter of importance to the understanding of Antarctica or the Southern Ocean.

The scholarship is tenable for up to one year by a candidate who, during the tenure of the scholarship, is studying for a PhD or is in the thesis year of a Master’s degree at the University of Canterbury in an Antarctic-related topic.

Marian D'Eve Memorial Scholarship

Ernest William File Scholarship

Applicants will: 
1.be the son or daughter of a financial member of the RMTU
2.be intending to hold the Scholarship in their first year of full time study for an undergraduate degree at a New Zealand university
3.not be accepted if they already have a qualification from a tertiary institution in New Zealand or overseas.

The Ernest William File Scholarship was established in 1978 by members of the New Zealand Locomotive Engineers' Association as a tribute to Ernest William File, the retiring General Secretary of the Association at the time. The Scholarship was adopted and expanded by the Rail and Maritime Transport Union and extended to all members. 

The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist the sons and daughters of members of the Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU) to commence study in their first year at a New Zealand university. Two scholarships are awarded annually.

UC International First Year Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

This scholarship recognises and supports top-achieving international students commencing an undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury. Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students and may not be citizens of New Zealand or Australia, or holders of New Zealand residence class visas. Applicants must be completing, or have completed on or after 1 January of the year before the year of application, a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a UC undergraduate degree programme. Such students who are undertaking, or have completed, a programme at the UC International College are eligible to apply. The scholarship may not be held by students who: have already undertaken partial study in an undergraduate degree programme at a New Zealand tertiary institution; or have applied for Transfer of Credit from a New Zealand tertiary institution to an undergraduate degree programme at UC. Candidates must have applied for admission to the University by 15 August in the year prior to their intended first year of enrolment at the University.

Go Canterbury Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the University of Canterbury and Campus Living Villages NZ to support students from Auckland and Wellington in their first year of study at the University of Canterbury. UC College of Engineering International Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Recipients must be full-fee-paying international students. Applicants may not be:
a. citizens of New Zealand or Australia; or
b. Permanent Residents of Australia; or
c. holders of New Zealand residence class visas.
Applicants must have completed a university entrance-level qualification that permits entry into a UC undergraduate degree programme before the closing date for applications for the scholarship. By 1 March or by 15 August as applicable, an applicant must have applied to the University for admission to the BE(Hons) programme.

Applicants cannot be already enrolled in a BE(Hons) programme at the University.

Lyttelton Port Company Directors' UC Scholarship

One scholarship will be available to applicants who have a parent who, on the application closing date in the year of application, is employed, full-time or part-time, by the Lyttelton Port Company and has been so for not less than 12 months. By 10 December in the year of application, applicants must have enrolled, or have applied to enrol, for full-time study at the University of Canterbury in the subsequent year. ("Full-time" is here defined as undertaking a course load of at least 105 points over a whole year.) Preference will be given to applicants enrolling for undergraduate study for the first time.

Geographical Society (Canterbury Branch) Research Grant

This grant is used to assist candidates for a Masters degree in Geography who are likely to incur heavy personal expenses in research for their theses. The grant may be awarded annually by the Council to a student or students on the recommendation of a committee comprising two academic staff members of the Department of Geography (one of whom shall be the Head of the Department) and two members of the committee of the Canterbury Branch of the Geographical Society (one of whom shall be the Chairman of the Branch).

F A Hayek Scholarship in Economics or Political Science

This scholarship supports students toward study for an honours or master's degree in the Economics or Political Science at the University. The scholarship is tenable by students enrolled in a programme for a master's or an honours degree in Economics or Political Science at the University with a course weighting in the range 0.75-1.50 EFTS. Such a programme must include a research component of at least 30 points. The scholarship is tenable in either part one or part two of a two-year master's degree programme. It is also tenable for 180-point, one-year master's degrees offered by the Department of Political Science or the Department of Economics and Finance.
