Eric Bleumink Fund

Eligibility requirements

Candidates for the Eric Bleumink Fund should:

  • Have obtained conditional admission to the program of choice
  • Have excellent academic performance, preferably to be confirmed by letters of recommendation
  • Have excellent grades during their bachelor/undergraduate studies;
  • Have excellent English language proficiency, in accordance with the admission requirements of the program of choice
  • Be available for the whole period of the programme and be able to take part in the entire programme
  • Be in good health, so that health insurance in the Hold the nationality of a country appearing in Appendix 1.
  • Have no other means of financing the study in question.

Application details

The University of Groningen Admission Office, in consultation with the Admission Boards of its faculties, will determine which applicants will be nominated for an Eric Bleumink Fund scholarship.

Only applicants that have received a (conditional) admission offer for a master programme before February can thus be considered. In order to allow for enough time to process the application to a master programme by the Admission Office, such a master application should be completed by the applicant before 1st of December.

Value details

The grant is awarded for a 1 year or 2 years Master’s degree programme. The grant covers tuition fee, costs of international travel, subsistence, books, and health insurance.

University of Groningen Talent Grant: Research Master Behavioural and Social Sciences

Eligibility requirements

Candidates who have been admitted to the Research Master programme Behavioural and Social Sciences can be awarded a scholarship when they are not able to self-finance in full.

Candidates can apply for this grant by sending a letter of motivation in which they indicate that they are in need of a grant and would like to be considered for the UGTG: Research Master Behavioural and Social Sciences.

Value details

€ 5000 in the first year, and another € 5000 in the second year upon satisfactory completion of the first year.

University of Groningen Talent Grant: Research Master programme Theology and Religious Studies

Eligibility requirements

Students with a nationality from countries outside the EU/EEA who have been admitted to the Research Master's programme of the Graduate School of Theology and Religious Studies per 1 September and are not eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans ("Studiefinanciering ”)

Application details

To apply for the scholarship, you should write a letter of motivation (in Word) of a maximum of 500 words, in which you indicate why you believe you should be considered for this scholarship. The Word document can then be attached to your application for the Research Master's programme for which you are applying. A selection committee will review the applications. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit.

Holland Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for the Holland Scholarship University of Groningen:

  • You do not hold the nationality of one of the EEA countries;
  • You are going to study in the Netherlands;
  • You do not have a degree from an education institution in the Netherlands;
  • You have excellent grades during your bachelor/undergraduate studies;
  • You meet the specific requirements of the University of Groningen;
  • You have a letter from the University of Groningen with an admission offer for one of the programmes mentioned in this list.
  • Write a motivation letter in which you make clear why you are the right candidate for a Holland Scholarship University of Groningen.

Selection procedure

  • The Holland Scholarship selection procedure is based on a comparison of all applicants that have submitted a complete Holland Scholarship application before the scholarship application deadline.
  • A ranking of candidates will be made after a careful evaluation of the applicant's academic merit (i.e. results obtained in study programme, academic research activities, overall evaluation of previous education etc.) and of the candidates' Holland Scholarship motivational statements.

DUO-IB-Groep Study Grants

Eligibility requirements

Candidates need to be registered as full-time degree students. Other conditions apply as well. 

Nationality requirements

If you have the nationality of an EU/EEA-country or Switzerland, you will qualify for student finance if you have been living in the Netherlands for 5 consecutive years or more. Or if you (or your non-Dutch parent or partner) work in the Netherlands for at least 56 hours a month.

If you are not a national of an EU/EEA-country or Switzerland, you can still qualify for student finance if you have a residence permit type I, II, III, IV of V. Use the nationality chart below (currently only available in Dutch).

UCG Scholarship Programme (USP)

Eligibility requirements

The USP scholarship is intended for students with an excellent academic profile, but who require financial assistance to study. Evidence of social engagement and extracurricular activities will support your request for funding. UCG aims to reward students with great ambition, but who also have a great passion for social engagement and who are determined to make a positive impact during their studies at UCG.

How to Apply for the USP Scholarship

  • Submit a letter of motivation to explain why you believe you should be considered for a scholarship. This should:
  • Be a maximum of 500 words in a Word document.
  • Explain why you believe you deserve a scholarship and why you need financial assistance for your studies (this is not why you want to apply for the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree as you will have already explained this in your application).
  • Explain your experiences with social engagement and extracurricular events. Explain how you want to contribute to society in the future, what issues are important to you and why it is important for you to be awarded the USP scholarship. Also explain your ambitions and how you would like to achieve these ambitions and goals during your studies at UCG.
  • The email title must be: 'Letter of Motivation - USP Scholarship'.
  • In order to be eligible for this scholarship you must complete your application in OAS before 1 February 2017 as well.

The value of the USP scholarship is €12,000 and this amount will be paid in monthly installments; The USP Scholarship is a grant towards study and living costs (not a tuition waver).

Marie Curie - Sklodowska Fellowships

Eligibility requirements

The fellowships are specifically for early stage researchers who have obtained a degree that gives them access to doctoral studies. They should normally be undertaking a doctoral degree in History or related fields; they may, however, be actively engaged in a research project without being registered for a doctorate. These fellowships are not open to post doctoral researchers.

Value details

Successful applicants receive a scholarship of approximately € 1323 per month (for University of Groningen) and a personal budget of approximately € 700 for mobility and travel expenses.

Stepping Stone Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

EU students (paying international tuition fees) with an excellent academic profile.

Application details

Submit a letter of motivation to explain why you believe you should be considered for a scholarship. This should:

  • Be a maximum of 500 words in a Word document.
  • Explain why you believe you deserve a scholarship and why you need financial assistance for your studies (this is not why you want to apply for the Liberal Arts and Sciences degree as you will have already explained this in your application).   • Be emailed no later than 1 April 2017 - the email title must be: 'Letter of Motivation - Stepping Stone Scholarship'.

The final funding decision will be communicated to you by the Admission and Selection Coordinator.

The Stepping Stone Scholarship is a grant towards study and living costs. The value is €4,000.

Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation - Graduate School of Medical Sciences scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Young biomedical research talent from non-EU countries in pursuit of an academic career at a top-100 University (THES/Shanghai). In applying for MPDI you will automatically compete for one of the available scholarships. Your letter of motivation should make explicit reference to why you believe you are the excellent candidate to receive this highly competitive scholarship.

Value details

Selected students receive a scholarship to cover tuition and living expenses. This scholarship is also available for the MSc Clinical and Psychosocial Epidemiology.

University of Groningen Abel Tasman Talent Program

Eligibility requirements

Do you belong to the top-10% of your class and have the ambition to pursue your career in (bio)medical or pharmaceutical research? Then you may want to apply to one of the talent grants of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences of the University of Groningen in The Netherland.

The /Abel Tasman Talent Program (ATTP) / of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences (GS-MS) of the University of Groningen was developed early 2010 to give high-potential international students in (bio)medical or pharmaceutical sciences an opportunity to excel in the field of research of their choice.

Value details

Roughly two types of support can be distinguished: financial support for students and staff within the framework of a larger cooperation network of so-called “preferred partners” abroad, and support for exceptionally talented students from other institutions.

University of Groningen Talent Grant: Faculty of Arts (MA)

Eligibility requirements

Non-EU/EEA students from Brazil, China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, and Russia who have been admitted to one of the Master’s programmes or the Faculty of Arts are invited to apply.

University of Groningen - Faculty of Arts – Talent Grants will not be awarded to applicants who have already obtained a University of Groningen Master’s degree or participating in another scholarship programme which covers tuition fee and/or living costs (e.g. Erasmus+ / EMA2 /NFP/Erik Bleumink Fund).

2 grants per country ( Brasil, China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Russia) available each year.

Application details

Students who would like to qualify for a Talent Grant should address the Netherlands Educational Support Offices (Neso) in their country. A selection committee will review the applications. Students are selected on the basis of (excellent) academic merit, result of English language test, extracurricular activities. Students will be notified as soon as possible about if they are awarded a grant.

Value details

The grant values 50 per cent of the annual tuition fee to be paid in monthly installments as a contribution in living costs. In 2015-2016 this will be €450 per month.

Ford Foundation

Eligibility requirements

Requirements for candidates:

  • Demonstrate superior achievement in their undergraduate studies and hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.
  • Have substantial experience in community service or development-related activities.
  • Possess leadership potential evidenced by their employment and academic experience.
  • Propose to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree that will directly enhance their leadership capacity in a practical, policy, academic, or artistic discipline or field corresponding to one or more of the Foundation's areas of endeavor.
  • Present a plan specifying how they will apply their studies to social problems or issues in their own countries.
  • Commit themselves to working on these issues following the fellowship period. IFP selects Fellows on the strength of their clearly-stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin, and expects that they will honor this obligation.

Application details

All applications must be submitted to the appropriate IFP International Partner listed on the Ford Foundation website (link) in the country or region where the applicant resides. IFP International Partners determine application deadlines and selection schedules in their region or country. Applications are reviewed and final selections decided by panels composed of practitioners and scholars from various fields of work and study. The level and duration of awards are determined as part of the selection process. Ford Foundation staff and their family members may not serve on selection panels and are not eligible to apply for IFP awards. Members of selection committees, staff of the organizations managing the program in the various regions, and their family members are also ineligible for IFP awards.
