PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Integrated weed management for the Australian Vegetable Industry

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:

  • Have a First or Second (Division 1) Class Honours or Masters level qualification in a relevant field
  • Have demonstrable knowledge of one or more of the following: crop agronomy, especially vegetable production; weed science; applied plant ecology.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have the capacity to undertake a substantial research project under the direction of the leadership team
  • Not be receiving an equivalent award, or scholarship to undertake the Higher Degree Research (HDR)
  • Have a letter of offer for a place in a UNE Research Degree (PhD), or have applied for a place at UNE.

Application details

Applicants should submit an application clearly demonstrating their suitability for the scholarship. This should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, full academic transcript and a statement addressing the specific eligibility criteria set out in the Scholarship Terms and Conditions. Applicants should also provide the contact details of at least two academic or professional referees.  Submission options include: Hard copies - Research Services Directorate, TC Lamble Building, University of New England, Armidale NSW 2351, and Australia; OR Electronically: Via the AskUNE website.

The Scholarship will not cover tuition fees or standard overseas health insurance premiums. International students or their sponsors will be responsible for the full amount of these costs.

PVCR Completion Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

  • A PVCR Completion Scholarship will normally be available to Doctoral students entering their fourth year of Doctoral candidature (full-time equivalent).
  • A student must be in the writing-up stage and have completed their data collection or equivalent.
  • A student must be able to complete their thesis within the nominated period. The maximum and recommended completion scholarship period is four months.
  • A student must be enrolled on a full-time basis during the scholarship period and must work full-time on the thesis.
  • In order to be considered for a completion scholarship, applicants must be strongly supported by their supervisor/s and their Head of School.
  • Students who have already held a previous scholarship, other than a completion scholarship, will be eligible to apply if they have not already received an extension as part of the previous scholarship.
  • Students who have already received a scholarship extension will be ineligible to apply for a  PVCR Completion Scholarship.
  • Students are ineligible if they are currently receiving a scholarship.

Eligible Doctoral students include those enrolled in the Doctor of Education, Doctor of Health Services Management, Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology), Doctor of Industry/Professions and the Doctor of Philosophy.

Application details

Students must submit:

  • A detailed Doctoral Thesis Completion Plan (including the identification of a clear and measurable Mid-Point Milestone to be achieved) and the likelihood of the thesis being completed and submitted for examination within the scholarship period;
  • Statements of support and endorsement from the Principal Supervisor; and
  • Endorsement from the Head of School.
  • Endorsement from external funding body or attached grant (if applicable)

Value details

The maximum value of the award is AUD $8,010 (maximum four month scholarship period), and this would be paid in three equal instalments of AUD $2,670 (if appropriate, tuition fees of international applicants will also be covered).

The UNE International Postgraduate Research Award (UNE IPRA) is a new scholarship being offered to top quality international candidates who wish to enrol in a research degree at UNE. Candidates who would normally apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) are encouraged to apply.

  • Up to 25 UNE IPRA’s are available to outstanding applicants who wish to enrol in a postgraduate research degree at UNE
  • These Awards are for commencement of candidature between 1 January 2017 and 31 March 2017 (Awards will not normally be available for commencement later than 31 March 2017).
