New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA)

Eligibility requirements

All applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years at the time of application
  • Hold current citizenship of India (and not be a citizen or Permanent Resident of New Zealand or Australia)
  • Hold a minimum equivalent GPA of B+ in your most recent or highest tertiary qualification
  • Have evidence of an offer of place at the University of Otago for an eligible undergraduate programme

In collaboration with Education New Zealand, the University of Otago is proud to offer the New Zealand Excellence Awards (NZEA) for 2019/2020 for undergraduate students from India.

Two NZEA scholarships are available, valued at NZ$10,000, for undergraduate study at the University of Otago

These scholarships are for study commencing in the second semester 2019 (July), or the first semester 2020 (February) for programmes with no second semester intake.

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

New Zealand Commonwealth Scholarships are prestigious scholarships that recognise New Zealand's history and ties to the Commonwealth.  Our Commonwealth Scholarships are part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) - an international programme under which Commonwealth countries offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth states.

The purpose of the scholarships is set out in the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan, with the following key principles to:

  • promote mutual cooperation and share educational experience among all Commonwealth countries
  • be available across the Commonwealth
  • recognise and promote the highest level of intellectual achievement.

University of Otago New Frontiers Entrance Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Application for all Entrance Scholarships are normally open to students who meet the requirements

  • International students who have completed an internationally recognised qualification at an overseas high school, such as A Levels, International Baccalaureate, or ATAR, AND have achieved excellent grades may be invited to apply.

OR

  • Who have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school (or for International students an equivalent foundation level course at a New Zealand tertiary institution).

AND

  • Are intending to enrol or have enrolled for the first time for full-time degree-level, undergraduate study at the University of Otago.

BUT

  • Those who have studied more than 0.4 EFTS at any University or tertiary institution at degree-level or higher are not normally eligible.

Diane Campbell-Hunt Memorial Award

Study level

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must: be enrolled and confirmed in a PhD programme in any Department or School at the University of Otago; have had accepted in a peer-reviewed academic paper (conference or journal) that contributes to New Zealand conservation, and in which they are the lead author. Not have previously been awarded the award. 

The intent of this award is to support research on any topic that will contribute to fostering the conservation of New Zealand’s plants and animals and the communities they form, including also the social processes involved in conservation, e.g. political, legal, economic and management, and to have the research communicated to a general audience. Each award must be taken up in the year in which it is made.

Applicants must complete the application form and enclose the following documents: a copy of the paper for which the award will be made; report from supervisor or head of department; summary of how the award will be used to support further research; statement outlining paper’s contribution to New Zealand conservation (500 words or less); detailed budget; statement outlining plans for how their research will be communicated to the public (500 words or less). This completed application form must be sent to: Scholarships Administrator, University of Otago, P O Box 56, Dunedin.

Master of Finance (MFinc)

Eligibility requirements

  • International students with an undergraduate degree in either Finance, Maths, Engineering, Physics or Economics, with grades equivalent to a NZ B+ average (GPA 3/4), and who meet the University of Otago's English Language requirements. 
  • To be eligible to be awarded the scholarship, students must have an unconditional offer (including meeting English language requirements) (NZ time). Applicants may be offered the scholarship before 31 October, but if they have not met their conditions by this date, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn.
  • Current international students at the University of Otago are eligible to apply.
  • Students who have been awarded another University of Otago scholarship are not eligible to be awarded this scholarship.

There is no separate application process for this scholarship. All applicants for the MFinc programme who submit the following additional documents will be considered for the scholarship:

1. A curriculum vitae (CV)
2. A cover letter outlining why they wish to study the MFinc at the University of Otago and why they are an excellent candidate for this programme.

If the documents have not been uploaded by eligible candidates during the programme application process, they will receive an alert in their eVision portal inviting them to apply for the scholarship by uploading the additional documents.

Students will be advised of the outcome of the scholarship if/when an offer letter is issued.

School of Biomedical Sciences Pacific Peoples’ Postgraduate Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

The School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Pacific Peoples’ Postgraduate Scholarship provides one Pacific Islands student each year with one-year support to study full-time for a BSc Hons, BBiomedSc Hons, PGDipSci or 1st year MSc within the BMS.

Applicants must be:

  • of Indigenous Pacific Island descent (either domestic or international)
  • intending to enrol full-time in a 400-level postgraduate programme offered by the School of Biomedical Sciences.

The tenure of the scholarship is for one academic year only

University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship provides funding to support doctoral students studying at the University of Otago.

The Scholarship is available to both domestic and international students. Candidates for professional doctorates, as well as the PhD, are welcome to apply.

Applicants must usually be:

  • seeking to obtain their first doctoral qualification

Selection is based predominantly on academic merit and the applicant’s potential for research.

  • Accounting graduates who studied their undergraduate degree in a foreign language may be considered for admission, and students who have work experience are welcome to apply.

University of Otago China Scholarship Council Doctoral Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be: obtaining their first Doctoral qualification supported by the China Scholarship Council

1) Unless otherwise stated in these conditions or within the schedule, doctoral and Masters’ scholarships are open only to Domestic Fee Paying Students.3 International candidates studying for professional doctorates are eligible to apply but if awarded a scholarship the tuition fee waiver will be capped at the domestic rate.

2) In the case of applicants for a doctoral scholarship, confirmation of the scholarship is dependent on approval of their application for admission to the relevant doctoral programme and completion of the enrolment procedure.

Alan Musgrave Scholarship in Philosophy

Applications are open to international students, who do not qualify for domestic tuition fee rates, intending to enrol full-time in the year following selection, either in a one-year BA (Hons) in Philosophy followed by a Master’s degree by thesis in Philosophy, or in a Master’s degree by thesis in Philosophy.

New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships are for Pacific Island candidates to gain knowledge and skills in specific subject areas that will assist in the development of their home country. Scholars undertake their study in the Pacific region, providing scholars with the option of studying closer to home in a Pacific environment and culture.

The New Zealand Regional Development Scholarship programme complements the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade's scholarships for training in New Zealand by:

  • enabling scholars to pursue programmes of study in fields where the option of studying in New Zealand is limited or not offered.
  • contributing to broader objectives including development of regional institutions and building strong person-to-person relationships across the region.

University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Applications are open to international students who are:

  • intending to enrol full-time in the first year of a coursework master’s degree which does not include a thesis option; or,
  • electing to choose the research report or dissertation option in a master’s degree which also allows a thesis option.

Applicants who have previously completed a coursework Master’s degree at the University of Otago will not normally be eligible for award of the scholarship. The tenure of the scholarship is for one year only.

Application details

Every applicant must submit an application on the prescribed form. For applicants yet to enrol in their chosen degree, this must accompany their application for admission to the degree. For applicants choosing a research report or dissertation option after initial study, application should be made directly to the University of Otago Doctoral and Scholarships Office, after result from initial Master’s papers are received, and no later than one month after starting the dissertation or research report component of their degree. The University of Otago Scholarships Committee shall consider the following factors in recommending award of the Scholarship:

  • the applicant’s academic record;
  • the advice, recommendation and ranking of the relevant Head of Department or nominee.
