Our Commonwealth Scholarships are part of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) - an international programme under which Commonwealth countries offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth states. Alan Musgrave Scholarship in Philosophy

Eligibility requirements

Applications are open to international students, who do not qualify for domestic tuition fee rates, intending to enrol full-time in the year following selection, either in a one-year BA (Hons) in Philosophy followed by a Master’s degree by thesis in Philosophy, or in a Master’s degree by thesis in Philosophy.

Tenure

The tenure of the scholarship is for two years in the case of a BA (Hons) plus Master’s thesis, or one year in the case of a Master’s thesis.

University of Otago Special Health Research Scholarship

The University of Otago Special Health Research Scholarship provides funding to support outstanding doctoral students who are contemplating a career in Health Research. 

Graduates in any discipline intending to undertake research training at PhD level on a topic relevant to human health are eligible to apply.

The Scholarship is available to domestic and international students. Candidates for professional doctorates, as well as the PhD, are welcome to apply. 

Applicants must usually be :

  • seeking to obtain their first doctoral qualification
  • studying, or planning to study, full-time
  • undertaking health related research

University of Otago China Scholarship Council Doctoral Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Established in 2016 in conjunction with the China Scholarship Council, this scholarship provides a tuition fee waiver for up to 4 years, for full-time PhD study and a supplementary stipend to ensure that each China Scholarship Council doctoral scholarship student receives the stipend equivalent in value to that received by recipients of a standard University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship. This scholarship is open to PhD candidates supported by the China Scholarship Council.

Applicants must:

meet the eligibility standards set by the China Scholarship Council to apply for and receive one of its scholarships. Please refer to the official website of the China Scholarship Council for more information.
have admission into the PhD programme at the University of Otago.

Applicants must be: obtaining their first Doctoral qualification supported by the China Scholarship Council

1) Unless otherwise stated in these conditions or within the schedule, doctoral and Masters’ scholarships are open only to Domestic Fee Paying Students.3 International candidates studying for professional doctorates are eligible to apply but if awarded a scholarship the tuition fee waiver will be capped at the domestic rate.

2) In the case of applicants for a doctoral scholarship, confirmation of the scholarship is dependent on approval of their application for admission to the relevant doctoral programme and completion of the enrolment procedure.

University of Otago Coursework Master's Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

Applications are open to international students who are:

  • intending to enrol full-time in the first year of a coursework master’s degree which does not include a thesis option; or,
  • electing to choose the research report or dissertation option in a master’s degree which also allows a thesis option.

Applicants who have previously completed a coursework Master’s degree at the University of Otago will not normally be eligible for award of the scholarship. The tenure of the scholarship is for one year only.

Application details

Every applicant must submit an application on the prescribed form. For applicants yet to enrol in their chosen degree, this must accompany their application for admission to the degree. For applicants choosing a research report or dissertation option after initial study, application should be made directly to the University of Otago Doctoral and Scholarships Office, after result from initial Master’s papers are received, and no later than one month after starting the dissertation or research report component of their degree. The University of Otago Scholarships Committee shall consider the following factors in recommending award of the Scholarship:

  • the applicant’s academic record;
  • the advice, recommendation and ranking of the relevant Head of Department or nominee.

  • Who have completed Year 12 and have completed or are in the process of completing Year 13 at a New Zealand school (or for International students an equivalent foundation level course at a New Zealand tertiary institution).

AND

  • Are intending to enrol or have enrolled for the first time for full-time degree-level, undergraduate study at the University of Otago.

School of Biomedical Sciences Pacific Peoples’ Postgraduate Scholarship

The School of Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Pacific Peoples’ Postgraduate Scholarship provides one Pacific Islands student each year with one-year support to study full-time for a BSc Hons, BBiomedSc Hons, PGDipSci or 1st year MSc within the BMS.

Applicants must be:

  • of Indigenous Pacific Island descent (either domestic or international)
  • intending to enrol full-time in a 400-level postgraduate programme offered by the School of Biomedical Sciences.

The tenure of the scholarship is for one academic year only

Candidates must:

  • Be enrolled and confirmed in a PhD programme in any Department or School at the University of Otago
  • Have had accepted a peer-reviewed academic paper (conference or journal) that contributes to New Zealand conservation (as defined above), and in which they are the lead author.
  • Not have previously been awarded the award.

TENURE

Each award must be taken up in the year in which it is made.
