Nanomechanical Computing Scholarship

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

Experience/interest in micro-/nanofabrication and/or technology translation would be an advantage.

PhD projects are available in the field of Nanomechanical Computing..

Background: Computers based on the flow of electrical currents are ubiquitous in modern technology. However, they have limitations: they cannot be forever miniaturised with Moore’s Law already starting to saturate, their energy efficiency is fundamentally constrained by the laws of physics, and they cannot operate when exposed to high radiation levels such those found in some space environments and caused by space weather. An alternative approach to computation that can evade these constrains is to use vibrations confined on a silicon chip, rather than electrons, to perform logic. In our laboratory, we are developing nanoscale logical processors based on mechanical vibrations in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, and for ultimate applications in aerospace and satellite technologies. Projects are available to lead the development of this new form of computing.

Precision and Quantum Sensing Scholarship

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

Experience/interest in laser-based measurements, micro-/nanofabrication, cavity optomechanics and/or technology translation would be an advantage.

PhD projects are available in the field of precision and quantum sensing.

Background: Optical devices provide unprecedented sensitivity in measurements of motion and of properties that couple to motion, such as forces, magnetic fields, spin, and temperature. Most notably, the sub-atomic-nucleus-precision of  kilometre-scale optical sensors has recently allowed the observation of gravitational waves emitted by black holes and neutron stars in distance galaxies. Gravitational wave detectors push measurement to its extremes, even into regimes where quantum mechanics plays a crucial role. An area of focus in our laboratory is to take the techniques and technologies developed for these detectors, miniaturise them to micro- and nano-scale on a silicon chip, and apply them to advance optical sensors focused on practical applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), trace-gas sensing, and accelerometry. Projects are available both to develop the fundamentals of the sensing technologies themselves and to apply them into applications relevant to our industry partners, who include Boeing and Orica.

Quantum Microscopy and Imaging Scholarship

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

Experience/interest in laser-based measurements, biophysics, quantum optics, an/or molecular biological would be an advantage.

PhD projects are available to apply quantum optics techniques and technologies to develop new tools for biological measurement and imaging. Measurements of micro- and nanoscale biological structures and dynamics are often severely constrained by photo damage introduced to the biological specimen by the intensity of light. This precludes, for example, measurements of the native dynamics of the motor molecules that are the machines of life – unravelling DNA, generating the energy that cells function on, and distributing nutrients around them. One focus of our laboratory is to develop quantum optics techniques and technologies – similar to those used in gravitational wave detection –  to improve microscopy of biological systems. We have, for instance, demonstrated the first quantum-enhanced biological measurements, and the first evanescent biosensors that operate beneath known biodamage thresholds.  PhD projects are available both to further extend this quantum microscopy technology, and to apply it to important biological problems. Experience/interest in laser-based measurements, biophysics, quantum optics, an/or molecular biological would be an advantage.

Laser Observation and Control of Superfluid Physics

Study level

Postgraduate

Eligibility requirements

Experience/interest in laser-based measurements, micro-/nanofabrication/cryogenics, cavity optomechanics and/or quantum condensed matter physics would be an advantage.

PhD projects are available in the fields of laser observation and control of superfluid physics.

Background: Superfluid helium is a strongly interacting quantum fluid with counter-intuitive behaviour such as flow without dissipation, the ability to flow up walls and quantised angular momentum. It has many potential applications in quantum-enhanced sensing and quantum computing. Most recently, theoretical research on the topological properties of two dimensional superfluid helium has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics. In our laboratory, we have developed new laser-based on-chip nanophotonic techniques to observe and control two dimensional superfluid helium at microscale, including the first demonstration of laser cooling of any liquid and the first real-time observation of thermally driven dynamics of phonons within the fluid. This combination of superfluid physics with nanophotonics provides a previously unprecedented ability to engineer the behaviour of superfluid helium, opening up the prospect of a range of new applications in quantum technology. Furthermore, it provides the possibility to directly confirm, for the first time, the existence quantised vortices in two dimensional helium – the basis of the 2016 Nobel Prize – and to experimentally explore the fundamental quantum hydrodynamics of a strongly interacting quantum fluid.
