Undergraduate Academic Excellence Awards

Application details

All international students with an Australian equivalent high school qualification applying for a UTS undergraduate program will be automatically considered for this Award. No separate application or documentation is required.

International Academic Excellence Award

UTS Presidents Scholarship (UTSP)

Study level

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the UTSP, a student must:

  • be an overseas student as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth); and
  • purchase and maintain a standard OSHC policy approved by the Commonwealth government Department of Health and Ageing; and
  • be commencing full-time enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at UTS (UTSPs are not available to applicants whose enrolment into a postgraduate research program has not been accepted by the University);
  • be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the University as one of its areas of research concentration; and
  • not have completed a degree at the same or higher level as the proposed candidature; and
  • not previously have held an Australian Government-funded postgraduate research scholarship, unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship payments commencing; and
  • not be receiving an equivalent award, scholarship (excluding an IPRS) or salary providing a benefit greater than 75% of the UTSP stipend rate to undertake the HDR. Income earned from sources unrelated to the course of study is not subject to the 75% rule.

Applicants should ensure that they submit their completed application, including all required supporting documentation, by the relevant application deadline. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

Value details

The benefits include a tax-exempt stipend of three years for a PhD candidate and two years for a Master's candidate for a full-time award valued at AUD $22,860 per annum (2011 rate), and thesis allowance.

  • Have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Division 1), or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment;

  • Be enrolled as a full-time student.

The successful candidate will be awarded AUD $36,288 per annum over 3 years (i.e. APAI rate + industry top-up). International students will also receive a UTS International Research Scholarship for their tuition fees.

UTS: INSEARCH Doctoral Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

International applicants or applicants with an international background. An applicant must have been offered a PhD admission into the Business School for study as a full-time student. They must have a bachelor degree with first class honours or equivalent level of attainment. They must not already have a doctorate degree.

Chicka Dixon PhD Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the Scholarship, an applicant must meet all of the following criteria:

Indigenous Australian (must complete a Confirmation of Aboriginality form or provide a statutory declaration)
Enrolled at UTS in a higher degree research doctorate
Applicants must have completed a university degree, at a minimum level of undergraduate degree, and have achieved a minimum grade of pass with no fails. Candidates with extenuating circumstances surrounding a failed subject will need to supply a statement describing these circumstances with their application.

Gordon Young Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this Scholarship applicants must:

  • be enrolled as a full-time student, about to undertake either an Honours' degree; a Master's degree by research or a PhD degree in the specified areas; and
  • have completed a relevant undergraduate degree.
  • The recipient is not permitted to hold other UTS Scholarships, unless an equity-based scholarship is approved by exception.

The scholarship is awarded in the amount of AUD $10,000 (or AUD $5,000 if two equally ranked candidates are awarded) over a one year period for an Honours degree; Master's degree by research; or a PhD degree student.

UTS Science International Scholarship for Australian Year 12 Students

Eligibility requirements

Candidates must:

  • be an international student at the time of application;
  • remain an international student post census date for the session in which they receive the Scholarship;
  • meet all admission criteria for the selected course;
  • be commencing full-time on-campus;
  • be applying for a UTS Faculty of Science undergraduate program;
  • have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification, no more than one year prior to commencing at UTS; and
  • have an ATAR of at least 80.

In addition to the above:

  • Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit.

You are not eligible if you:

  • are a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or hold permanent residency of Australia; or
  • are the recipient of a full tuition fee Scholarship for the intended studies at UTS; or
  • have enrolled in a UTS transnational program.

Category One: Up to one (1) new Recipient will be granted the Scholarship each calendar year.

Category Two: Up to five (5) new Recipients will be granted the Scholarship each calendar year.

UTS International will automatically consider all commencing international students who have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification and are applying for an undergraduate program at UTS Faculty of Science in Sydney for this Scholarship.

Value details

Recipient selected in category one will be awarded AUD $5,000 towards their first session tuition fees. Recipients selected in category two will be awarded AUD $3,000 towards their first session tuition fees.

  • have an ATAR or equivalent of at least 80.

In addition to the above:

  • the Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit.

You are not eligible if you:

  • are a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or hold permanent residency of Australia; or
  • are the recipient of a full tuition fee Scholarship for the intended studies at UTS; or
  • have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification.
  • have enrolled in a UTS transnational program.

Category One: From 2017, up to two (2) Recipients will be granted the Scholarship in Autumn session, and up to two (2) Recipients will be granted the Scholarship in Spring session.

Category Two: From 2017, up to ten (10) Recipients will be granted the Scholarship in Autumn session, and up to ten (10) Recipients will be granted the Scholarship in Spring session.

UTS Science International Scholarship for Excellence (Postgraduate Coursework)

Candidates must:

be an international student at the time of application;
remain an international student post census date for the session in which they receive the Scholarship;
meet all admission criteria for the selected course;
be commencing full-time on-campus;
be applying for a UTS Faculty of Science Master by coursework degree; and
attain a minimum overall average of at least 75% in the Bachelor qualification

In addition to the above:
the Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit.

You are not eligible if you are:
a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or hold permanent residency of Australia; or,
the recipient of a full tuition fee scholarship for the intended studies at UTS; or
enrolled in a UTS transnational program.

Category One: In 2016, up to five (5) new Recipients will be granted the Scholarship. Category Two: In 2016, up to ten (10) new Recipients will be granted the Scholarship.

UTS Science Diploma to Degree Scholarship (INSEARCH)

  • be an international student at the time of application;
  • remain an international student post census date for the session in which they receive the Scholarship;
  • meet all admission criteria for the selected course; be commencing full-time on-campus;
  • be applying for a UTS Faculty of Science undergraduate program;
  • completed a Diploma in Science at UTS:INSEARCH;
  • have an overall GPA of at least 4.5 out of 7.0

In addition to the above:

  • the Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit.

You are not eligible if you are:

  • the recipient of a full tuition fee scholarship for the intended studies at UTS; or
  • enrolled in a UTS transnational program.

UTS Science International Diploma to Degree Scholarship for Excellence (Polytechnics in Singapore)

Candidates must:

  • be an international student at the time of application;
  • remain an international student post census date for the session in which they receive the Scholarship;
  • meet all admission criteria for the selected course;
  • be commencing full-time on-campus;
  • be applying for a UTS Faculty of Science articulated undergraduate program;
  • have completed an approved pathway Diploma qualification from a Polytechnic in Singapore prior to commencing at UTS;
  • have an overall GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0

In addition to the above:

  • The Scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit.
  • At least one (1) Scholarship to be granted to graduates from each of the following Polytechnics:

Singapore Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic

You are not eligible if you are:

  • a citizen of Australia or New Zealand, or hold permanent residency of Australia; or
  • the recipient of a full tuition fee scholarship for the intended studies at UTS; or
  • enrolled in a UTS transnational program.

UTS International will automatically consider all commencing international students who have completed an approved pathway Diploma qualification from a Polytechnic in Singapore and are applying for an articulated undergraduate program at UTS Faculty of Science in Sydney for this Scholarship. There is no separate Scholarship application or documentation in addition to what is required for the coursework application.

Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI)

Eligibility requirements

These scholarships are funded by the Australian Research Council's Linkage-Project grants and provide an opportunity for outstanding postgraduate students to undertake industry-based research.

Academic staff who apply for project funding from ARC may nominate a particular student as the scholarship recipient or will advertise the scholarship if a student is not nominated on a successful funding application.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for the IPRS, you must be an overseas student (as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth)) and meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP), including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Australian Government Department of Health.

Applicants awarded the IPRS must enrol to undertake a higher degree by research candidature within UTS's areas of research strengths and commence their studies in the year of award. Successful applicants must be able to commence in full time enrolment for the first time in the year for which the IPRS is awarded, unless they:

  • commenced their HDR a year before, and due to the timing of their application and subsequent enrolment were not able to apply for the IPRS for that year, or
  • previous commenced an HDR and terminated that enrolment within six months of commencement

Applicants will not be considered for this scholarship if they:

  • already hold a research qualification regarded by UTS as equivalent to the commencing HDR course.
  • have held an Australia Award (AusAID) scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS
  • have been receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution
  • previously have received an IPRS for a research degree

Students to be eligible for the UTS IRS, must:

  • be an overseas student as defined in the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (Cth); and
  • purchase and maintain a standard OSHC policy approved by the Commonwealth government Department of Health and Ageing; and
  • be commencing full-time enrolment in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at UTS;
  • be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the University as one of its areas of research concentration; and
  • not hold a research qualification regarded by the University to be equivalent to an Australian research doctorate degree or, if undertaking a research master's degree, not hold a research qualification regarded by the provider to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian research master's degree; and
  • not have held an Australian Agency for International Development scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the UTS IRS; and
  • not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution; and
  • not previously have received a UTS IRS for a research doctorate degree, unless converting to a research master's degree; and
  • not previously have received an UTS IRS for a research master's degree, unless: ii) that degree was completed and the student is immediately undertaking a research doctorate degree; or ii) the student has converted their HDR under paragraph 3.25.15 of the Commonwealth Scholarships Guidelines (Research) 2010
  • Applicants should ensure that they submit their completed application, including all required supporting documentation, by the relevant application deadline. Incomplete and late applications will not be considered.

  • Must have completed or be completing a UTS:INSEARCH Diploma in Sydney, Australia; and have an overall grade of credit average or above in their Diploma; and
  • Meet the UTS admission criteria for the selected UTS undergraduate degree course; and
  • Must be commencing studies in a UTS undergraduate degree in the next available intake after completion of the candidate's UTS:INSEARCH Diploma; and
