Robert A. Fern Memorial Award

One award will be made to a senior undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies who has made a significant contribution in either volunteer work with persons with disabilities or applied research which has relevance to the lives of persons with disabilities. Interested graduate students are invited to apply.

This award honours the memory of Robert A. Fern, an employee of Parks Canada and the Department of Canadian Heritage, who was recognized world wide as a leader in advancing accessibility and participation by persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.

Christine and David Edwards Graduate Studies Travel Award

A travel award valued at CAN $500 is provided annually to full-time graduate students registered in the Master’s or Doctoral program in the School of Pharmacy in the Faculty of Science who are presenting a paper or poster at a conference. This fund is made possible by a donation from Christine and David Edwards. Autism Scholars Award

With the support of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (MAESD), a Scholar Awards Program in Autism has been established to ensure that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent scholars.  The community of autism scholars fostered by this Awards Program will excel, according to internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the creation of new knowledge concerning child autism, and its translation into improved health for children, more effective services and products for children with autism, and increase the province’s capacity in diagnosis and assessment of autism and a strengthened treatment system.

Graduate Studies Research Travel Assistantship

Cindy Ditner Award in Public Accounting

Donald E. Grierson Memorial Award

The awards, valued at a minimum of CAN $1,000 will be provided annually to a full-time doctoral student registered in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Waterloo who has demonstrated financial need who is in good academic standing (minimum 80%). Preference will be given to international students.

Students must complete the Graduate Student Award Application form and attach a one page summary on how their research in structural engineering aims to advance the analytical and/or numerical technologies and has the greatest potential for impact either at the societal or theoretical level. Nihar and Mina Bose Graduate Scholarship in Economics

  • Graduate student registered full time in the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo
  • Preferences in order of priority are as follows:
  1. Preference will be given to international doctoral students. If no suitable candidates are found, then the award can be given to international master's students, domestic doctoral or domestic master's students
  2. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate an interest in economic theory or econometrics. If no suitable candidates are found, the award can be given to students studying in any field of economics.
  3. Preference will be given to a student who had previously been living in India.

Mathematics Global Scholarships

Approximately 10 scholarships, valued at CAN $12,000 to CAN $25,000 each over eight academic terms, are awarded to incoming undergraduate students enrolled in any program in the Faculty of Mathematics (excluding Software Engineering and Computing and Financial Management). These scholarships are open to international students studying on a study permit only. Payments beyond Year One are dependent on the student maintaining an overall academic average of 80% or greater and continued enrolment in an approved program. The typical candidate will have a distinguished academic standing, especially in mathematics, as well as a record of accomplishments in mathematics and/or computer science contests throughout high school. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate interest in mathematics or computer science beyond standard course requirements, including activities such as active membership in math or computer science clubs, enriched mathematics studies, employment/voluntary experiences, or hobbies. Participation and achievement in student government, athletics, music, art, etc. are also considered.

Michael and Ophelia Lazaridis Olympiad Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

A scholarship will be presented annually to a full-time undergraduate student entering first year of a program in the Faculty of Mathematics (excluding Software Engineering, Computing and Financial Management, double-degree programs, and students participating in the Mathematics/English Language for Academic Studies program). Recipients of this scholarship must be medalists in either the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) or the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) before their final year of high school. This scholarship will cover the cost of the following for a maximum of eight terms: full tuition (including incidental fees), co-op fees, text book allowance, a residence allowance, and a food allowance. This scholarship is supported by a generous donation made by Michael and Ophelia Lazaridis to attract exceptional individuals to join Waterloo as researchers and students.

Briarhurst Travel and Research Award

  • The award is to rotate on an annual basis between these two departments.
