Many current students are high-performing and awarded with internal and external honours. Entry Requirements

Everyone applying to study at SUNY Buffalo State has to meet certain entry requirements, which change from course to course. There are also some general university entry requirements that all international applicants will need to meet. All undergraduate applicants, for example, will need to have completed 12 years of education to the right pre-university level, while all postgraduates will need previous university qualifications (usually a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject).

At all levels of study, university requirements ask that international applicants show they can cover the costs of living and studying in the USA (around USD 35,912 annually) and demonstrate a minimum level of English language understanding and skill.

Course-specific entry requirements are usually measured by GPA. For example, a bachelor’s degree in economics at SUNY Buffalo State asks an applicant to have a minimum GPA of 2, while a master’s in English asks for a bachelor’s degree and a minimum GPA of 3 in English (2.75 overall).

English Score Required

All the courses at SUNY Buffalo State are taught in English, so applicants, domestic or international, must be able to show that they have a good level of English understanding. For undergraduates and postgraduates, the right amount of writing and speaking ability in the language of instruction could be the difference between a successful learning experience and a poor learning experience.

SUNY Buffalo State recognises lots of different English proficiency tests, including the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Duolingo English Test and the Pearson Test of English (PTE). Each test has a minimum score listed by the university, and applicants who can’t meet this minimum score won’t be considered for admission.

To use the IELTS and the TOEFL online as examples, undergraduates need an overall IELTS band score of at least 5.5 or an overall TOEFL result of at least 61. Postgraduates need an overall IELTS band score of at least 6 or an overall TOEFL result of at least 79.

There are English language pathway programmes available to students who don’t meet the English requirements when they apply but really want to study at the university. They can complete the English as a Second Language programme and then resubmit their scores with approval from SUNY Buffalo State.

Admission

International students applying for university admission at SUNY Buffalo State all follow an easy, three-step process. The first step is choosing a course and completing one of two student admission forms. Form one is a SUNY Application, which allows applicants to apply to multiple SUNY colleges at once. Form two is a Common Application, which allows applicants to directly choose one college to apply to (SUNY Buffalo State, in this case). Both applications charge a USD 50 fee (USD 65 for postgraduates).

The second step is submitting all the relevant supporting documents to continue the admission process. These include a personal essay, a financial statement, academic transcripts, a copy of the applicant’s passport, proof of English proficiency, a transfer credit evaluation (if applicable) and a degree evaluation (if applicable).

The third step is to keep track of their application and fully enrol if and when they’re offered a place. The average annual tuition fee for undergraduate international students at SUNY Buffalo State is USD 18,396, dropping slightly to USD 17,964 for postgraduate international students.
