Overview

Established in 1964, Cleveland State University has played host to over 120,000 graduates, 80% of which live in the city. Located in the heart of Cleveland, the University has a sprawling 85-acre campus. It is organised into 8 colleges, and over 200 different types of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in various fields are on offer.

Over 1,400 international students study at the University. Cleveland works towards creating a conducive environment; its small class sizes and expert faculty are instrumental in helping students reach their goals. The University has ties with leading industries and organisations, such as the Cleveland Clinic, USA National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) and General Electric. Students gather relevant experience through these partnerships, and learn to adapt themselves globally.

The University’s Intensive English Language Programme (IELP) is meant for students looking to hone their English skills.

Student activities are aplenty, ranging from Student Government Association, Student Bar Association, a student-run radio station, three student newspapers, literary magazine and 200 professional, social and cultural organisations.

The University keeps investing in its campus infrastructure so that it holds the latest facilities and serve the needs of students. The new USD 50 million Student Centre is meant to foster a strong student community. Students can choose from a range of housing options at Cleveland, such as the ‘campus village’ that houses apartments, shops, restaurants and green spaces.

Life at Cleveland is filled with excitement, with scores of things to do and see. Many museums, arts centres and theatres are located in the city that let students know the world outside. Since Cleveland is located close to both Ohio and New York City, it offers an extraordinary life for international students.

Two of Cleveland State University’s faculty members have been selected to receive one of the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious honours. Engineering professors Eric Schearer and Chris Wirth have both been named winners of the Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Programme Award, the highest recognition National Science Foundation (NSF) gives to early-career faculty. The awards include a multi-year grant to be used to advance innovative research, while also providing mentoring and training to assist in developing the next generation of higher education leaders.

“The NSF CAREER programme is highly competitive and only awarded to the top early-career researchers in the nation,” says Dr. Ronald M. Berkman, president of Cleveland State University. “This announcement exemplifies the excellence and dedication of our faculty, and I would like to personally congratulate Professors Schearer and Wirth for this tremendous accomplishment.”

“This recognition from NSF also highlights the growth and increased national prominence of CSU’s overall research enterprise,” added Dr. Jerzy Sawicki, Vice President for research at Cleveland State. “Drs. Schearer and Wirth are both conducting novel research that will have significant positive impacts for our region and society as a whole, and these awards will greatly expand their efforts.”

The CAREER Programme was created by the National Science Foundation in 1994. It honours individuals who are working on cutting–edge scholarship with significant societal impact, who also have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education in their institutions and nationally.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Cleveland State University is one of America’s Best Colleges. It offers over 175 academic programmes in 10 colleges and schools, and boasts of an ever-expanding campus that makes up the largest footprint in Cleveland.

The University is part of a vibrant downtown Cleveland, where something exciting is always happening. It has one of the lowest tuition rates in Ohio — rates that are now guaranteed for four years — and a value that exceeds expectations.

Brookings researchers assessed the strengths of four-year public universities across the United States. Some improved opportunities for students from underprivileged backgrounds, while the others expanded the boundaries of knowledge via impactful research. Only 20 percent of the 342 universities in the study successfully did both, including CSU.

Cleveland State University students graduate fully prepared to thrive in rewarding careers. With a powerful combination of higher education and real-world experience, students can explore more than 3,000 co-ops and internships – more than any other public university in Ohio – at nearly every major employer in the Cleveland area, including Progressive and NASA. CSU connects students with unparalleled, hands-on opportunities in technology, manufacturing, health care, finance, education, the arts and other industries throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond.

In the latest U.S. News & World Report national rankings, CSU’s Washkewicz College of Engineering is No. 170 on the list of Best Undergraduate Engineering Programmes and CSU’s Monte Ahuja College of Business is No. 283 on the list of Best Undergraduate Business Programmes.
