Utrecht Excellence Scholarships - Masters

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an Utrecht Excellence Scholarship, you must

  • Belong to the top 10% of your graduating class
  • Not hold an EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
  • Have completed your secondary school and/or Bachelor degree outside the Netherlands
  • Have applied for an international master’s programme with a start date in September.

Application details

After submitting an application for the Master’s programme, non-EU/EEA students will have the option to submit an application for an Utrecht Excellence Scholarship. Prospective students who wish to be considered for the scholarship must apply before February 1 (00:00 Dutch time).

You will need to upload the following document:

Proof of belonging to the top 10% of your graduating class: an official document issued by your university that proves you are among the top 10% of your graduating class, such as a statement signed and stamped by your University, a reference letter, a class ranking certificate, etc.

Covers tuition fees or tuition fees plus 11.000 euro living expenses

Holland Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a Holland Scholarship, you must

  • Not hold an EU/EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
  • Never before have been enrolled at an educational institution in the Netherlands
  • Have applied for an international master’s programme at Utrecht University with a start date in September.
  • Meet the specific entry requirements of the programme

Application details

After submitting your application for the Master’s programme non-EU/EEA students have the option to submit an application for the Holland Scholarship. You will need to upload the following documents:

  • Motivation letter explaining the relevance of your time in the Netherlands and at Utrecht University to your career goals
  • A statement of financial resources demonstrating you can cover the remaining cost.

Prospective students who wish to be considered for the scholarship must apply before February 1 (00:00 Dutch time).

Geosciences Scholarship

Eligibility requirements

The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for one of these scholarships. The applicant should:

1. Hold a non-Dutch passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study for grants and loans;

2. Have been admitted to a Master's Programme within the Utrecht University Graduate School Geosciences;

3. Hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent thereof from a non-Dutch university with a Grade Point Average of 7,5 or higher according to the Dutch grade system. In the Netherlands grades from 1.0 up to 10.0 are used, with 1 being lowest and 10 the highest. A GPA of 7,5 is (for instance) comparable with at least an 60% in the UK and a B+ (or a 3.3) in the United States.

4. Belong to the top 20% of his/her final undergraduate year, as evidenced by a university statement;

5. Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa (only for students from non EEA countries).

Application details

  • The completed Geosciences Scholarship application form;
  • Your bachelor’s thesis or equivalent thereof in English;
  • A motivation letter of one page, explaining why this scholarship should be awarded to you.

It is strongly advised to send the scholarship application at the same time as your application for the Master’s Programme. Applications must be received before March 1st if you are starting in September of the same year.

Utrecht Excellence Scholarships - Bachelors

Eligibility requirements

The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria in order to be considered for this scholarship. The applicant should:

  • Not have the Dutch or an EU/EEA nationality and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans;
  • Hold a non-Dutch secondary school diploma;
  • Have been admitted to the Bachelor’s programme in Economics and Business Economics or to University College Utrecht;
  • Hold a relevant secondary school diploma (for a Bachelor’s programme), or an equivalent thereof;
  • Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch visa;

Failure to meet one or more of these criteria automatically means the student is not eligible for this scholarship.

Application details

It is not possible to apply for the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship. The selection committee of the programme will select eligible candidates on the basis of the selection criteria. Prospective Bachelor's students in Economics and Business Economics who wish to be considered for the scholarship should apply for admission before 1 April. Different procedures apply for Liberal Arts & Sciences at University College Utrecht, please proceed to the UCU website.

Utrecht Sylff Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

The Utrecht Sylff Scholarship offers a number of outstanding prospective graduates from University College Utrecht and the Bachelor’s programme in Economics and Business Economics the opportunity to pursue a Master’s programme in the field of Humanities or Social Sciences (including Economics) at Utrecht University.

The applicant must meet the following eligibility criteria in order to be considered for this scholarship:

  • Be a student or recent graduate of one of the programmes mentioned above.
  • Hold a non-Dutch passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (“Studiefinanciering”).
  • Have been admitted to one of the international Master’s programmes of Utrecht University in the field of Humanities or Social Sciences (including Economics).
  • Be able to comply with the conditions to obtain a Dutch residence permit (if applicable).

Application details

It is not possible to apply for the Utrecht Sylff Scholarship. The selection committee of the programme will select eligible candidates on the basis of the selection criteria.
