Merit scholarships are based on academic performance in high school, the strength of your high school's curriculum, and standardized test (SAT or ACT) scores. In order to maintain a merit scholarship, students must progress toward the completion of their program of study at a rate that will ensure graduation in a reasonable length of time, both quantitatively (credit hours) and qualitatively (grades) while maintaining full-time, undergraduate, day status. Assistance is limited to eight full-time semesters, is applicable to tuition charges only, and is reviewed annually.

Maguire Foundation Endowed Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

The Maguire Scholars Fund provides scholarship awards to up to five incoming Widener freshmen each year and is renewable each year for a total of four years providing students continue to meet qualifications.

Eligibility to be considered for a Maguire Scholarship includes:

  • Coming from a select list of Philadelphia-area high schools
  • Applying as freshmen and being admitted to the university
  • Remaining in good academic standing, and actively participating in school and community volunteer extracurricular activities
  • Demonstrating financial need as determined by the university

Military Scholarships

Eligibility requirements

An ROTC scholarship is available for students that participate in Widener's Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps program.

As the former Pennsylvania Military Academy (PMC), Widener University also supports active and fallen military members and their families by offering several scholarship opportunities such as the General Carl E. Mundy Jr. Marine Corps scholarship as well as the Widener CARES scholarship program for children of fallen military personnel who were killed in action in either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Eligibility requirements

Each year a limited number of full-tuition scholarships are awarded based on the strength of the applicant pool. To apply for a full-tuition scholarship, a separate application is required. If qualified, prospective applicants will be invited to interview for the scholarship.

Minimum criteria to be considered for an invitation to interview for a full-tuition scholarship:

  • 1410 minimum combined SAT score (Math & EBRW sections), or 30 minimum ACT composite score
  • Top 10% of senior class
  • 3.85 minimum cumulative grade point average (based on a 4.0 grade scale)
