Top 10 books for IELTS

Planning to take the IELTS and overwhelmed by too many books on the market? Look no further…here is a detailed guide of the top 3 books in 2014, as well as other recommended ones.

1) The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS and CD-ROM

This book got the top spot simply because it was designed and published by the actual markers of the exams. Based on previous students responses and mistakes, this book tests the student on the 4 main sections (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), which is further broken down into sub-sections for further clarification. The best part is that this book gives examples of how to tackle or approach a particular question or task, and ways to improve one’s performance. The book also comes with 8 full IELTS practice tests with detailed answer key for each one. The enclosed DVD covers the listening and speaking sections.

2) Barron’s IELTS Superpack

This superpack containing 3 manuals packed into a neat box consists of: IELTS manual with 2 audio CDs, sample IELTS Practice Exams with 2 audio CDs,  and an Essential Words for the IELTS manual. The set offers plenty of suggestions and tips on how to tackle the tasks and questions, and the practice tests allow the student to slowly gain the skills required before attempting the actual test. The Essential Words section gives students the opportunity to expand on their vocabulary. The only downside about this superpack is that the accents of the speakers on the CDs are American, whereas native British speakers will be featured in the actual test.

3) Target Band 7: IELTS Academic – How to Maximize Your Score

This user-friendly book was written by an ex-marker herself, Simone Braverman. The book is written clearly with her own personal style, which makes it an easy read and a useful guide with plenty of tips on how to approach and tackle questions effectively. Although the detailed study plan is an added bonus, the book does not offer full length practice test samples or an audio CD. However, the author’s website provides plenty of resources and guides on IELTS-related materials.

4) Cambridge IELTS 9 Self-Study Pack (student book and audio CDs)

5) IELTS Practice Tests Plus 2 with Key and CD pack

6) IELTS Trainer 6 Practice Tests with answers and audio CDs

7)  Ace the IELTS : IELTS General – How to Maximize your Score

8) IELTS Advantage : Writing Skills

9) IELTS Writing Section (Academic) : How to Achieve a Target 8 Score

10) Barron’s Essential Words for the IELTS with MP3 CD
