Scholarships and financial aids for SPM and STPM students

Have you missed the boat with most scholarships and financial aids? It’s still not too late. There are a few more scholarships and financial aids available to Malaysian students hoping to secure grants this year, or even if you’re an early bird and preparing to fund your studies for next year, there are a couple of schemes open now. Here’s our last minute guide to scholarships and financial aids. What are you waiting for?

1.Sunway Special Pre-University Scholarship 2014

Deadline: 2 August 2013              

Scholarship info

The Sunway Special Pre-University Scholarship 2014 is a special programme dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in academia and extra-curricular activities (ECA). Students who are all –rounders with academic excellence and ECA performances are encouraged to apply.

Criteria

- Open to all candidates sitting for the 2013 SPM examinations

- Results of 5As (combination of A- and above) in the school’s Form 5 mid-year examinations

- Currently hold or have held positions of responsibility in school or in extra-curricular activities such     as sports, societies, clubs or uniformed bodies. Competition winners of various levels should also apply.

Preferred discipline 

- Australian matriculation/Cambridge GCE A Level/ Canadian International Matriculation Programme/ Monash University Foundation Year/ Sunway Foundation in Arts

Amount

-Successful applicants will receive tuition fee waiver amounting to one of the following amounts; RM5,000 / RM8,000 / RM10,000/ RM15,000

2.Tan Sri Ahmad Razali Merit Scholarship Award, UCSI University

Deadline: 2 August 2013

Scholarship info

Students with excellent academic achievements and exemplary leadership attributes, active participation in extracurricular activities and outstanding recognition on notable achievements are encouraged to apply.

Criteria

-SPM: 10A+ / As and above in relevant subjects including English

-STPM: CGPA ≥ 3.80 with relevant subjects taken into consideration

- A-Level: 3As in relevant subjects

- Malaysian MOHE Matriculation: CGPA ≥  3.80 with relevant subjects taken into consideration

-  UEC: 8As and above in the relevant subjects including English

- SAM & CPU: Aggregate ≥  90%

- Diploma: CGPA ≥ 3.80

- IB: CGPA ≥ 40

- Or any other equivalent qualification

Discipline

- All courses

- Scholarship applicants for music programme must have at least a minimum grade 8 for music theory and practical for classical, and minimum grade 7 for contemporary

3.UCSI University Trust Scholarship

Deadline: 2 August 2013

Scholarship info

Students with excellent academic achievements and exemplary leadership attributes, active participation in extracurricular activities and outstanding recognition on notable achievements are encouraged to apply.

- SPM: 10A+ / As and above in relevant subjects including English

4.UCSI University Trust Sports Bursary

Deadline: 2 August 2013

Scholarship info

This bursary is available to any state and /or national athlete verified by the National Sports Council of Malaysia and the respective Sports Association.

Criteria

- State Athlete A player who represents the state in sports at the national level games/sports/events

- National Athlete A player who represents the country in sports at the regional and international level games/sports/events

Discipline

-Any degree except medicine, pharmacy and nursing

Amount

-Successful state athlete applicants will be awarded a 75% tuition fee waiver while national athlete applicants will receive a 100% tuition fee waiver to study at UCSI University

5.Top STPM Scorers Scholarship Scheme

Deadline: 12 August 2013

Scholarship info

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) offers 5 full fee waiver scholarships for students who have been unsuccessful in achieving an IPTA place and instead wish to pursue undergraduate programmes at UNMC.

The scheme is merit based and is only applicable to students entering in to Year 1 of an undergraduate programme in the 2013/2014 academic year (i.e enrolment in September 2013).  

Criteria

- Applicable to students entering in to Year 1 of an undergraduate programme at UNMC and excludes Master of Pharmacy (Hons) and BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence

- Only eligible for September 2013 entry. Existing UNMC Foundation programme students progressing to Year 1 are not permitted to apply

- Applicants must be willing to declare family’s financial status

- Applicants must have applied for an IPTA place and either been rejected or else provide a reason for their rejection of the offer

- No change of course and university are allowed

6.JPA tuition fee loan scheme for overseas studies

Deadline: August 18 2013

Scholarship info

Students who need financial aid for their overseas bachelor degree can apply to this loan scheme. Only applicable to students who are going to Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.  

Criteria

- Under 25 years of age on 1 January in the year of application

- Have not started first degree

- Mother/father/siblings/student is not a borrower/guarantor to any loan scheme or government scholarship and not blacklisted in any government loan scheme

- Only 1 member of the family is entitled to get the loan. Application of other members of the family will be considered once the borrower has paid back the loan for at least 6 months

- For twinning programme, loans are approved only for the period of study outside the country

7.Selangor State Education Loan

Deadline: 30 August 2013

Scholarship info

The State Government of Selangor invites pre-university students (SPM/STPM/Foundation/Matriculation/Diploma) to apply for its education loan. The loan is for public and private institutions of higher learning.

Criteria

- Applicant was born in Selangor or either one of the parents born in Selangor

- Applicant has resided more than five years in the state

- Applicant has been offered a place to study full time in a public or private institution of higher learning

- Applicants with good academic qualifications will be given preference

8.Sports Studies Scholarship

Ministry of Youth and Sports and Cyberlynx International College invite SPM leavers to apply for its diploma programmes.

Criteria

- SPM leavers

- 18 -25 years old

- Acquire at least 3 credits including Bahasa Malaysia and English and pass the SPM exam

- Applicants must be from families with monthly income of RM3,000 and below
