Australia is the land of sun, sea, surf, and excellent university courses. It’s little surprise that it’s one of the top destinations of choice for international students. If it’s also your dream to study at a university in Australia, read on to find out how to apply to study there.
What do I have to do to apply to study in Australia?
You need to think about the course you want to take, the university you want to go to and the place you’d like to live. Here are some questions to ask yourself and some things you need to consider when deciding to be an international student in Australia:
The fees are different for each university and different courses. As an international student, you need to be able to show proof (evidence) that you can pay your fees and living expenses when you apply for your student visa. Most international students in Australia are full fee-paying, however, some scholarships and funding are available.

Two more things to check before you apply
When you’ve thought about and researched all the above, it’s time to apply for your chosen course. Before you continue, you need to check what the qualifications requirements are for your chosen course.
For example, if you want to do a postgraduate degree:
-
What bachelor’s degree do you already need to have?
-
What grades do you need to have?
-
What level of English do you need for this course?
-
Have you taken the IELTS test to show your level of English?
-
Do you have the necessary IELTS band score?
If the answer is no to some or any of these questions, you may need to consider doing a foundation or pathway course first. If you want to improve your English language score, there are also pre-sessional English courses available.
How to make an application to study in Australia
Now you know that you meet the university’s entry requirements (needs), you can start applying. Each Australian university has its own application process, so you’ll need to find out what you must do for your chosen institution.
Another point to remember is to find out about their application deadline. You don’t want to miss the date, and you want to have enough time to put together all the information that they’re going to need.
The kind of information that universities will need from you includes:
-
Personal details – name, date of birth, address, etc.
-
Information about your academic qualifications - you need to have the equivalent (the same) as an Australian Year 12 studies for undergraduate study.
-
Course you are applying for
-
Any work experience you have
Go to each university’s profile and check out their requirements. If you can’t find the information you need there, contact the university’s admission office to ask your question(s).
How do I know if my application was successful?
If your application is successful, you’ll receive an offer from the university. The offer may have some conditions attached to it, for example, they may request that you have an overall band score of 6.5 in the IELTS test as proof of your English language level.
Make sure you read the conditions carefully and make a note of the deadline for accepting the offer. You don’t want to miss this important date either. When you have accepted the offer and paid the fees, the university will send you a Confirmation of Enrolment; you’ll need this document to apply for your student visa.
You then apply for your student visa, book your flight, and pack your bags to begin the next exciting phase of your life. Wishing you the best of luck.
