What is TESL?

What is TESL?

TESL is an acronym for Teaching of English as a Second Language. It is the teaching of English in countries which uses English as their common everyday language – but not as their native language. This degree enables you to teach English as a second language in schools – both private and government schools. TESL usually falls under the Education faculty in universities.

Requirement

The standard minimum requirements for pursuing a TESL degree in Malaysia is a good credit in SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) English, preferably B4 and above, and a Band 4 and above for MUET – apart from the compulsory credits for subjects such as Bahasa Melayu in SPM and Pengajian Am in STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia). You need to also demonstrate good proficiency in the English language, as well as a passion for teaching. Both of these skills need to come hand-in-hand as you pursue this degree. A passion for teaching is crucial as you study TESL because teaching will be the basis of your career as an English teacher.

What you need to know about TESL

  1. TESL is not a platform for learning English.

Many students think that TESL is a program aimed at improving their English, especially when they are not proficient users of the language themselves. But the truth is that even though you will have the opportunity to gradually improve your command of the English language throughout your course of study, chances are, you will struggle to cope.

TESL involves a lot of critical thinking, writing, and reading. If you’re not proficient enough, you may end up plagiarizing your work. A fairly good command of English is essential before you get started in studying TESL.

  1. It’s more than just knowledge about English

TESL is not about measuring how good your level of English is, but rather it is about your good your English language teaching skills are. More than just having the knowledge about the English language, you will need to have a passion to teach – to make sure your students learn from you as much as they can.

A degree in TESL takes up approximately 4 years of studies, depending on which institution you study in.
