Why studying in the UK doesn’t have to mean London

Often when international students think about studying in the UK, they think this means studying in London. This is not necessarily the case, however. There are a number of top ranked universities in the UK and many of them are outside of London. There are also several universities throughout the UK that are popular among international students, are world-leading and can offer a calm alternative to the busy rush of the capital.

 

The University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh in Scotland is one of the top ranked universities in the UK, with highly reputable research expertise and lecturers across all departments, most notably humanities, social science, medicine, sciences and engineering.

 

The university offers a lively student community with regular student events.  There’s also a vast array of bars, shops, restaurants and other entertainment venues for students to choose from in their spare time and let’s not forget the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

 

Additionally, there are more than 240 student societies that provide a place for like-minded students to come together, network, socialise, or participate in group activities and hobbies. With approximately 32,000 students and more than 50,000 applicants a year, it is a tricky institution to get into, but is sure to offer international students the experience of a lifetime!

 

The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is another great university in the UK that’s not located in London but in the historic town of Nottingham and is widely considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the UK.

 

It is also one of the most popular schools for international students in the UK due to its emphasis on internationalism within all its courses of study. The university offers a wide array of services to its international students, including assistance with immigration, post graduate careers and employability, support and advice on schooling, health and personal safety and even offers support for students with families.

 

The University has over 60 academic departments, and offers courses on a wide variety of subjects. There are over 40,000 students enrolled and around 10,000 of which are international students from over 150 countries.

 

University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is a popular choice for educational pursuit in the UK for domestic and international students alike. The university has around 33,000 students enrolled with over 10% of those students being international. The University of Leeds is also one of the most sought after schools in the UK, and consistently receives the second highest number of applicants each year. 

 

The university offers around 560 different Bachelor’s degree programmes and approximately 300 postgraduate degree programmes, giving its students a wide array of choices when it comes to course study.

 

Additionally, the University of Leeds’s award-winning student union is one of the best in the UK and Leeds is famed throughout the UK for its energetic social and party scene! The Leeds Student Union is set up as a democracy, giving students of the university the ability to inspire and create change, which makes student life fun and easy. The union supports around 300 activities, sports and clubs for students and is constantly making strides to be better. Most recently, the union was recognised for its efforts in environmental friendliness. 

 

There are a lot excellent schools in the UK that are internationally renowned and top ranked, several of which are in London, but as you can see, there are also options for great schools outside of London and these are just a few of the many great universities to choose from. What are you waiting for? Break the trend and explore the rest of the UK for yourself – you’re likely to have a more unique and ultimately fulfilling experience.
