Speaking to Hotcourses Abroad, Ian Thomson, Head of the International Office at the University of Glasgow said, “We do a lot of focus groups with the students to find out what we’re doing right, whether they are having a good experience, whether the classes have met their expectations, and if they haven’t then we feed that back in and work on it for the next cycle. So it’s about making sure they are happy before they arrive, but once they are here, we look at how we can improve it for the next cycle of students.”

Reasons for Glasgow’s international success

Being a proud supporter of the #WeAreInternational campaign means that the University of Glasgow puts a huge emphasis on making international students feel welcome. With students and staff from more than 120 different countries worldwide, students will meet people from all around the globe whilst studying at the institution.

Glasgow provides a welcome service as soon as students arrive at the airport, including free transport to the campus. There is also a detailed international orientation programme, so that students feel adequately settled in within their first days. There are also a number of dedicated welfare support advisers for international students, English language courses, and the International Family Network, which brings together international students, their families and local families across Glasgow.

“When international students arrive they feel welcome, they feel wanted within the city and part of a real community. We have great students who go and meet international students at the airport, then there is an inclusive and packed orientation schedule that helps them get used to the campus, and find their way around so that they know what is expected of them in the opening few weeks”, said Ann Wilber, Marketing Recruitment Manager at the University of Glasgow.

What do students say about Glasgow?

The lecturers are so good and experienced at what they do. Considering the fact that there is a diversity of student, the lecturers make it their responsibility for students to understand what they are trying to pass across and are very patient with students who do not understand there accent and try to make sure they understand. Glasgow is a very lovely city, good tourist site and Glaswegians are very friendly people.” - Ezinwa, Mres Infection and Immunobiology

“It is a great privilege to study in the University of Glasgow and I can confirm to you that you will be better than what you are now after your graduation from the university” - Sherif, MSc Mechatronics

“I love the University of Glasgow! The course setting is reasonable, easy to follow and there's a lot of coursework and laboratory work, which I love to do. The staff are nice, friendly and could be contacted, quite conveniently! The library facilities are easily accessible and the University grounds and campus areas are beautiful and serene. Our International Society arranges day trips and weekend trips almost every weekend and very cheap prices and it is a great way to make friends and explore Scotland! The night life is amazing, with a lot of gigs going on all the time! You can never run out of things to do here in this eventful city!” - Fathimath, BSc Biochemistry
