University of Warwick, the highest ranked UK university in the THE 100 Under 50 rankings 2015

Times Higher Education have published their fourth annual 100 Under 50 rankings, celebrating the best universities in the world who are less than half a century old. The University of Warwick came in at 9th as the highest ranked British university, ahead of the likes of Dundee, Brunel and Plymouth.

Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne finally topped the rankings, swapping places with South Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology (Postech), now in 2nd place, and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 3rd. In all, the top 10 includes universities from 8 countries, while the top 100 includes universities from 28 countries.

Meanwhile Australia is the country with the most universities in the top 100 with sixteen overall. Their highest-ranked university is the University of Konstanz at 19th. Phil Batty, rankings editor for Times Higher Education, said: ‘The UK has lost its position as top nation in the 100 Under 50 to Australia, a country with a richer and more diverse university mix. While only four of the UK’s 15 representatives were founded after the 1960s, Australia has institutions established in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s among its 16-strong list. While there is no suggestion that the UK’s great 1960s institutions are likely to lose their world-class status any time soon, it must be cause for concern that the fresh waves of universities created since the 1990s have yet to make any mark in the global rankings.’

The rankings aim to look ahead to the future Oxfords and Cambridges which will dominate the World University Rankings in the coming decades, as well as the countries which will serve as the top study destinations for international students.

On the rankings themselves, Batty said: ‘The universities in this unique and pioneering ranking are disrupting the old order. They have proved that world-class teaching and research is not just the preserve of an ancient elite.’

These rankings are based on the same 13 performance indicators used to decide the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, slightly adapted to better critique these younger universities.
