If you choose to undertake study in the United States of America then you have 50 States to choose from. From California in the west to New York in the east, America has plenty of options for your dream study abroad experience.

How to apply for study in the US and entry requirements

Remember that starting the process early on is more likely to guarantee you a space on a course. Allow yourself a significant period of time to learn about different US institutions and what city is best suited for you. Once you have chosen a university or college then you should apply immediately. Deadlines to some institutions are up to ten months before the first day of term.

To apply for a university in the US you will need to write a personal statement which outlines why you want to study a specific subject and why your application should be taken seriously. It would be a good idea to get yourself recommendations and references from your school tutors or a place of work. Even if you have all of this information already ready, it’s a good idea to apply almost a year in advance.

Almost all US colleges and universities require you to have taken some standardized admission tests in order to gain entrance to their respective programs. These tests can include: SAT, ACT, MCAT, IELTS and TOEFL. The tests will give university and college admission officers a chance to determine whether or not you are eligible for university admission, so it’s a good idea to prepare for these tests well in advance so that you know what to expect.

Education requirements vary depending on which university you are applying for. Most university websites list entry requirements such as common questions asked. You will also need to provide mid and final year reports for your school studies as well as teacher evaluations and the standardized tests mentioned above.

Deadlines

Deadlines vary from institution to institution but the general rule of thumb is to apply for your places as quickly as you can. Places at all universities go extremely quickly, and it would be a good idea to begin searching for your university a year in advance. This will allow you enough time to pick a course that is right for you as well as leave you enough time to apply for your student visa.

Again, application deadlines vary significantly. Harvard University asks you to apply for your place no later than November the 1st, whilst New York University requires international applications to be sent no later than March 15th. Check your institution website to be 100% certain.

Checklist

If you have decided to apply to university in the USA, then make sure you find the institution that is right for you. The USA is a huge place and cultures can vary significantly from state to state so it is essential that you do your research before you choose a place to study. If however, you are happy with your choice of institution then the next step is to ensure that you are prepared for your standardized test (TOEFL, IELTS, SATS etc).

If you are offered a place at a university or college then make sure that you have the financial capability to live comfortably whilst you are abroad.

You’re almost there now...all you need to do is make sure that you have applied for your student visa in time and you'll be well on your way to your dream study experienec in the USA!
