Providing students with the best all-round experience is at the heart of Edith Cowan University’s mission. The university has been ranked best for student experience out of all public Australian universities according to the Australian Government’s Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching. More than 85% who responded to the survey rated ECU highly. The university was also one of the highest rated in the country for teaching quality, skills development and student support.
International students are a vital part of ECU, and the university consistently recognises the high achievements of the international student body. It therefore awards a number of scholarships to help eligible students fund their studies. Awards range from the Vice-Chancellor’s Student Award for Contribution to University Life, to the Family and Alumni International Scholarship. ECU is continuously recognised for its excellent teaching standards. In the 2019 edition of the Good Universities Guide, the university scored 86.4% for teaching quality, placing it within the top 20% of Australian universities. It has been awarded a five-star rating for teaching quality for twelve years in a row, and is the only public university in Western Australia to have achieved this.
Both teaching and research staff at ECU are passionate about developing and providing students with an education that will better them as individuals and the lives of people across the globe. Courses are designed with careers in mind; industry professionals advise on programme content, making graduates highly attractive in the employment market. Students engage in plenty of practical work to complement their theoretical studies, by participating in industry placements, networking events and field trips, and are given the chance to study abroad at another university as part of their course.
There are eight academic schools at ECU, each offering a diverse range of courses:
Subject areas covered in the School of Arts & Humanities span from contemporary arts to social sciences. Students are encouraged to study modules in different areas of the school for a broad education.
Courses at ECU’s School of Business & Law are designed with a heavy focus on industry needs. Students can opt to study law, finance, marketing, and much more.
The biggest of its kind in Western Australia, the School of Education is for students who wish to make a positive impact on the lives of younger generations. All courses are rich with useful practical experience.
ECU’s School of Engineering offers programmes covering all kinds of engineering – from electronics to naval architecture. Courses are accredited by Engineers Australia and recognised by the Washington Accord.
For those interested in biomedical science, environmental health, occupational safety and other related areas, the School of Medical & Health Sciences has an extensive range of courses on offer.
A large number of specialist courses are available from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, all with sufficient theory and practical experience included.
Providing a wide variety of programmes, the School of Science will stretch the minds of students who wish to study computing, biology, mathematics or one of the other many related areas.
Well known across Australia and recognised around the world, WAAPA’s courses cover everything performing arts-wise, both on stage and behind scenes.
To study at ECU, international students must meet both the academic and English language requirements. There are a number of ways to satisfy these, including through secondary education results, successful completion of a Diploma programme or a year’s tertiary study from an approved institution.
English language requirements for undergraduate courses generally ask for a minimum score of IELTS: 6.0; TOEFL iBT: 70; GCE O Level: Grade C; GCE A Level: Grade E; PTE: 57–64; OET: B in each component; or another acceptable equivalent. These may change and are dependent on the course, study level, and other factors.
Pathway programs from other Perth institutions are available for those who wish to study as an undergraduate but cannot meet the requirements. Many of these courses include help for those with low English language levels.
ECU offers financial support in the form of scholarships to help international students who require it. Students will have to meet eligibility criteria for all the scholarships on offer. Some of the scholarships available are:

The Student Guild also provides financial support. Interest-free emergency loans are available for students who require it. There are also other means of support which students can seek advice for from relevant services staff.
International students can choose to live on any of ECU’s three campuses at one of the accommodation options, managed by Campus Living Villages. A variety of living arrangements are available, including single and multi-room units with communal self-catering areas. Villages are positioned nearby campus buildings, meaning all facilities are easily reachable.
Rent costs begin at around AUD 200, and there are a number of 50% accommodation scholarships on offer for those who study at Mount Lawley Campus. There are also off-campus accommodation options available, which are organised by ECU Village.
Students can take advantage of the many facilities on campus, from food and drinks outlets which suit all dietary preferences and requirements, to the Student Health Services where practitioners, nurses and other professionals provide health assistance. There is a free and supportive Multifaith Chaplaincy, Student Guild which supplies academic, social and financial help and activities, hair and beauty salon, library and optometrist. On-campus facilities also include the use of academic equipment including multimedia technology and up-to-date computer software.
